Box Score Alec Tzaneteas and Jack Donnelly scored two goals apiece and Jake Smolokoff added a goal and two assists but the Susquehanna University Men's lacrosse team fell in a tight back and forth battle in a Landmark Conference game with the University of Scranton Saturday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Field in Scranton.
The River Hawks (10-6 Overall, 4-1 Landmark) got on the board first when Jack DiGregorio netted an unassisted goal to give them an early 1-0 advantage with 12:36 remaining in the first quarter.
The Royals (10-5, 4-2) scored two straight goals over the following five minutes of action to take their first lead of the game, 2-1.
One minute later, Smolokoff knotted up the score on an unassisted goal and Donnelly added another goal in a man-up situation on a feed from Smolokoff to give the River Hawks a 3-2 edge after one quarter.
Louis Pillari scored on an assist from Travis Belt in the opening minutes of the second quarter to extend the advantage to 4-2.
After Scranton put in a goal of their own at the 10:50 mark, senior Andrew Porzio was able to score just over a minute later and Tzaneteas scored a goal on an assist from Jack Gerrity to give Susquehanna a 6-3 lead.
The Royals were able to score once more in the second quarter and the River Hawks carried a 6-4 lead into halftime.
Scranton was able to level the score in the third quarter by netting two goals and holding the River Hawk offense in check.
Donnelly scored the opening goal of the fourth quarter on another assist from Gerrity at the 13:31 mark. After two more Royal goals, Tzaneteas netted his second goal of the game on a pass from Smolokoff to tie the game at eight.
Scranton scored a goal with 5:50 remaining in the fourth quarter and the River Hawks were unable to put one in the back of the net in the closing minutes and dropped a close one, 9-8.
Dylan Abplanalp made 15 saves in net and Pierce Mead picked up six ground balls.
The River Hawks come home for a Senior Day regular season finale against Drew on Saturday at 1 p.m.
