Jimmy Loftus hit a solo home run and John Cooley tossed seven strong innings as the Susquehanna University Baseball team pounded out 10 hits and defeated Shenandoah University 4-1 Thursday afternoon in a non-conference game at Bridgeforth Field in Winchester, Va.
The win for Susquehanna (14-19) was the sixth this season over a nationally-ranked opponent. The River Hawks downed Wooster and North Central in Florida, Catholic University twice in conference play, Keystone and now Shenandoah which is currently ranked No. 14 in the latest D3Baseball.com poll.
The River Hawks took advantage of two fielding errors in the second inning as Ryan Casey scored an unearned run on a Craig Roumes single to give Susquehanna a 1-0 lead.
Shenandoah (27-9) tied the score in the third with a two-out double that scored a runner from first.
The River Hawks took the lead for good in the sixth as Loftus reached on another fielding error and then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Luke Tuttle doubled down the left field line to score Loftus for the go-ahead run.
Loftus added an insurance run in the eighth inning with a two-out solo home run and the River Hawks capped the scoring in the ninth by manufacturing a run. Tuttle singled to start the ninth and moved to second on an Anthony Dombrowski sacrifice bunt. Tuttle took third as Roumes lifted a fly ball to right and then scored when Justin Miller singled to right field.
John Cooley started and threw seven strong innings allowing a run on four hits with one walk. Bobby Grigas threw a 1-2-3 inning in the eighth and Will Carey capped off the strong pitching performance with another 1-2-3 inning in the ninth.
Roumes finished the day 3-for-5 while Miller, Tom Giaimo and Tuttle contributed two hits each.
Susquehanna returns to Landmark Conference play Saturday and Sunday with a three-game series against Drew.
