Softball Splits in Final Home Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Kasey Bost went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored, Leigh Ann Greenwald went 3-for-4 with four RBI and Gabby Bubba threw three no-hit innings in relief as the Susquehanna University softball team defeated Misericordia University 8-2 in game one before dropping game two 1-0 in a non-conference doubleheader Thursday at Sassafras Field in Selinsgrove.

In game one, the Cougars (19-15) scored first in the top of the second inning on a solo home run to take an early 1-0 lead.

The River Hawks (24-10) scored a run in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at one. With Jackie Gore on second base, Ellen Smith roped a single to left field. The left fielder bobbled the ball and that allowed Gore to score on the play.

Misericordia scored another run in the top of the third inning, but a Greenwald RBI single to score Kodi Streeter in the bottom of the inning knotted the game at two.

The score remained tied until the bottom of the fifth inning, where the River Hawk bats broke out for four runs to take a 6-2 lead.

With McKayla Brady on third base and Bost on second, Greenwald hit a two run single to break the tie. With one out and Greenwald on third base and Gore on second, Brittany Hedba hit an RBI groundout to score Greenwald and advance Gore to third base. Heather Pearson followed that with an infield single to finish the fifth inning scoring.

In the bottom of the sixth, Bost hit a long home run to left field and a few batters later Kelly Miller added a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 8-2.

Gabby Bubba relieved starter Alexa Gonzalez and did not give up a run or a hit in three innings of work to cement the win.

Greenwald and Bost each had a multi-hit game for the River Hawks and Gore reached base in every plate appearance as she had four walks.

In game two, the Cougars were able to scratch across one run in the bottom of the fourth and it was enough to pull off the victory.

Susquehanna hit the ball hard throughout the game but were unable to put together a rally. They loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning but could not plate any runners.

Emilie Boman, Bost and Greenwald were able to register hits and Brooke Wiarda threw three shutout innings in relief in the loss.

The River Hawks close out Landmark Conference play when they travel to Drew Saturday for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
