Baseball Drops Series Finale Against Drew

Anthony Dombrowski, Justin Miller and Cole Luzins had two hits and an RBI apiece while Ryan Beckwith turned in a solid starting performance but the Susquehanna University Baseball team could not complete the three game series sweep of Landmark Conference opponent Drew University as they fell 5-4 Sunday afternoon at Harold Bollinger Field in Selinsgrove.

The River Hawks (16-20 Overall, 8-7 Landmark) scored twice in the bottom of the second inning to take an early 2-0 lead.

Dombrowski dunked in an RBI single down the right field line with two outs to score Craig Roumes and plate the first run of the afternoon. Peter Yarem moved to third base on the play and scored soon after when the ball was thrown away trying to catch Dombrowski stealing.

The Rangers (16-18, 6-9) scored once in the third inning and tallied another run in the fifth inning to knot up the score.

Starter Ryan Beckwith was relieved of his duties after five innings and Drew managed to score two times in the top of the sixth inning.

Trailing 4-2, Miller cut the Rangers lead in half with a two out RBI single in the bottom half of the inning that knocked in Dombrowski.

After surrendering another run in the seventh inning, the River Hawks brought the score to 5-4 when Luzins hit an RBI double that scored Miller all the way from first base.

Reliever Will Carey shut down Drew in the top of the ninth inning to give Susquehanna a chance to rally, but the team could not plate any runners despite getting two runners into scoring position and fell 5-4.

Beckwith threw five strong innings, giving up only two runs on three hits and striking out six batters.

The River Hawks had 12 hits in the game with eight different players recording a base knock.

Seniors John Cooley, Jack Kinney, Tom Giaimo, and Cole Luzins were honored before the game.

Susquehanna travels to York College for their next contest on Tuesday before they take on Scranton next weekend in its final regular season Landmark series.
