Box Score 2 Cole Luzins was 3-for-4 with 4 RBI including a two-run home run and Bobby Grigas threw a complete game allowing just two runs for the Susquehanna University Baseball team on the way to a 9-2 victory before dropping a 1-0 decision in the nightcap against Landmark Conference foe Moravian in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Harold Bollinger Field in Selinsgrove.
In game 1, Moravian (12-11 overall, 6-5 Landmark) got on the board in the top of the first inning, but the River Hawks (7-13, 3-2) answered with a run in the bottom of the second inning and added two more in the bottom of the third.
In the second, with Ben Burman on first base with a single, Nick Berger knocked a triple to right field to tie the game at one.
In the bottom of the third, Tom Giaimo led off the inning with a double and scored on a Luzins double two batters later. With Luzins on third after a wild pitch, he was able to score when another wild pitch was thrown and Susquehanna took a 3-1 lead.
The Greyhounds scored another run in the fifth inning to inch closer, but the River Hawks scored three times in the bottom of the inning to extend their lead.
Justin Miller lead off the inning by getting hit by a pitch and Luzins knocked him home from first with his second double of the afternoon. Later in the inning with two outs and the bases loaded, Peter Yarem hit a two run single to score Luzins and Berger.
Leading 6-2 in the sixth, Giaimo started the bottom half of the inning with a triple. Miller scored him on an RBI single and Luzins broke the game open with a shot that easily carried the left field wall for a two-run home run.
Grigas pitched a clean seventh inning and cemented a 9-2 victory.
Luzins, Giaimo, Berman, and Berger all had multi-hit games for the River Hawks. Grigas struck out 9 batters in seven innings of work to pick up the complete game win.
In game 2, Tyson Thrush threw 6+ innings while giving up only two hits and an unearned run in a pitcher's duel. Will Carey relieved him and threw three scoreless innings to close out the game.
The River Hawks couldn't get the bats going and failed to score a run as they suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat. They put runners in scoring position in the second, eighth and ninth innings, but were unable to score.
Miller and Berger had two hits apiece for Susquehanna.
The River Hawks return to Harold Bollinger Field to close out their three game series with Moravian tomorrow at 2 p.m.
