Box Score Lance Welsh hit a Grand Slam in the top of the seventh inning to cap off a nine run inning and Nick Berger added a two-run home run, but early pitching woes dug the Susquehanna University baseball team a hole they could not climb out of and the team's rally fell short as they dropped a 15-13 decision against York College Tuesday afternoon at Jaquet Field in York.
The River Hawks (16-21) scored first when Berger knocked his two-run home run in the top of the first inning.
The Spartans would go on to score fifteen straight runs over the next six innings to take a 15-2 lead which seemed to be enough to run away with the victory.
A nine run seventh inning rally by Susquehanna brought the team right back into the game.
Ryan Casey got the first RBI of the inning on a single that brought home Cameron Ott. Tom Giaimo followed that by reaching on an error, with an errant throw bringing home Luke Tuttle.
Cole Luzins then knocked a two-run triple to trim the lead to 15-6.
After Jimmy Loftus walked and Steve Lorenz added an RBI single, Welsh came to the plate with the bases loaded and clubbed a grand slam that sailed well over the left field wall to bring the score to 15-11.
Trailing by the same score in the top of the ninth inning, Lorenz added an RBI double that hit the left center field wall. Three batters later, Giaimo had a bases loaded walk to cut the lead to 15-13.
The River Hawk rally was cut short right after when the final out of the inning was recorded and York came out with the win.
Six players drove in at least a run on the day while Lorenz and Ott recorded multi-hit games. Welsh's home run was his first on the season.
The team travels to Scranton for their final Landmark Conference series Saturday and Sunday.
