Kelly Miller hit an RBI single, Brooke Kohler and Leigh Ann Greenwald had two hits apiece and Alexa Gonzalez turned in a solid start but the Susquehanna University Softball team fell 2-1 in a low scoring affair with the Scranton Friday afternoon in the first round of the Landmark Tournament on Blue and Grey Field at Moravian College in Bethlehem.

The Royals (32-9) got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when they capitalized on a River Hawk error with two outs to take an early 1-0 lead.

The River Hawks (26-15) answered with a run of their own in the top of the second inning. After a Greenwald single and a Jackie Gore walk, Miller lined a single to center field and Greenwald looked to be thrown out at home. Greenwald stopped running and dodged the tag of the charging catcher before sprinting home to tie the game.

Scranton tallied a run in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI double and that proved to be the difference in the game.

Susquehanna was able to put runners in scoring position with no outs in the sixth and seventh innings but were unable to plate any runners.

Gonzalez got the tough luck loss after a solid pitching performance. She went six innings, gave up two runs (one earned) while only giving up four hits.

The team outhit Scranton six to four. Kohler and Greenwald had two hits each while Gore and Miller added one hit each.

The River Hawks return to action Saturday in the double-elimination tournament when they play Catholic at 10 a.m. in Bethlehem.
