Box Score Hunter Pitman scored twice and Maddie Taylor added her first goal of the season as the Susquehanna University Field Hockey team scored a 3-1 victory over Wilkes University Friday afternoon in the first round of the Connie Harnum Classic on Sassafras Field in Selinsgrove.
The River Hawks (1-0) will face Franklin and Marshall (1-0) at 3 p.m. Saturday in the championship game of the tournament. Wilkes (0-1) will play Kean University (0-1) at 1 p.m. in the consolation game. Kean, ranked No. 14 in the preseason national poll dropped a 1-0 overtime decision to Franklin and Marshall, ranked No. 4 in the same national poll.
Against Wilkes, Susquehanna dominated the play early in the contest and had several scoring opportunities before Pitman netted her first goal at the 23:17 mark of the opening period. Gabby Martin picked up the assist on the play.
Just over seven minutes later, Taylor made it a 2-0 Susquehanna advantage as she took a pass from Heather Casey and shot from the right side of the goalie into the back of the cage.
Midway through the second half, Pitman struck again and scored an unassisted goal to give the River Hawks a 3-0 edge.
Wilkes added a late goal with less than a minute to play to draw within 3-1.
The River Hawks held a 15-8 advantage in shots and Veronica Green stopped three shots to earn her first career victory.
