Box Score A goal in the last 1:15 of the game broke a 1-1 tie and led Muhlenberg to a 2-1 victory over Susquehanna University Friday night in a non-conference men's soccer game to start the 2018 season. The game, at Muhlenberg, was the season opener for each team.
Chris Naiman scored the first goal of the game in the 28th minute to give the River Hawks (0-1) an early 1-0 lead. The unassisted goal came on a breakaway as the Muhlenberg (1-0) goalie made the save on the first shot but surrendered the rebound and Naiman found the back of the net for the lead.
Just over 10 minutes later and with just seven minutes left in the opening half, the Mules knotted the score with a shot past Matt Ellingworth to tie the score at 1-1.
The score remained tied until late in the second half as Muhlenberg took the lead with a header off a crossing pass from the right.
The statistics were even with 11 shots for each team but Muhlenberg held a 9-3 edge in corner kicks in the contest.
The River Hawks return home for the first game on Sassafras Field for a 2 p.m. Sunday game against York College.
