Men’s Soccer Downed by York Despite Strong First Half

Box Score

Junior Alex Graul scored on a penalty kick in the 29thminute and the River Hawks held a 1-0 lead into halftime but the Susquehanna University Men's Soccer Team was unable to contain the Spartan offense in the second half and dropped a 3-1 decision to York College Sunday afternoon at Sassafras Field in Selinsgrove.

Neither team took control in the opening minutes of action, which resulted in limited goal scoring opportunities for both sides. The Spartans managed to get off a few long distance shots that were of no trouble for River Hawk keeper Matt Ellingworth.

Susquehanna got the first real opportunity of the game when Graul received the ball on the top left corner of the 18-yard box. He made a variety of moves to get in close to the goal and fired a shot that clearly hit the hand of a Spartan defender. The handball occurred in the box and Graul was able to finish the awarded penalty kick into the bottom left corner of the goal.

The first half finished similarly to how the half started with back and forth play but York came out strong in the second half, scoring three times in a matter of 15 minutes (between the 57th and 72ndminutes of play).

Susquehanna had a few more goal scoring opportunities later in the game, including three corner kicks and a shot from distance that hit the crossbar but the ball never found its way into the back of the net.

Ellingworth finished the game with four saves. Graul led the team with two shots on goal.

The River Hawks continue non-conference play when they take on Lycoming at 7 p.m. Wednesday on Sassafras Field.
