Volleyball Takes Down Catholic and Juniata to Earn #1 Spot in the Conference

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The Susquehanna University volleyball team took down Catholic in the first match 3-0 and No. 21 Juniata 3-2 in the second in Saturday's Landmark Conference Tri-match. This is the first Susquehanna has beaten Juniata as well as the first time the River Hawks are going into the conference tournament with the top spot.  Junior right- side hitter Sydney Portale (Glen Mils, Pa./Garnet Valley) lead the River Hawks with 32 kills across the two matches.

How It Happened
  • The River Hawks (30-5) took down the Cardinals (16-16) 25-19 in the first set behind 16 kills to Catholic's 10.
  • Catholic was able to keep the score close in the second set but, the River Hawks took set wo 25-18, scoring on 15 kills and recording a .261 attack percentage as a team.
  • Susquehanna dominated set three 25-14, notching 14 kills to just seven by the Cardinals.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Rosina Esposito (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) led the team against Catholic in kills with 14 while Portale was also in double digits wth 10.  
  • Junior libero Lizzie Herestofa (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley) lead the team in digs with 12, Lindsey Pugh (Bear, Del./Caravel Academy) recorded nine and senior Carolina Beohm (Lancaster, Pa./Garden Spot) tallied two service aces.
  • Catholic's leaders were Patricia Martinez with 12 kills, Isabelle Cooper with 11 kills, and Caroline Kelly with 16 digs.

How It Happened
  • Susquehanna claimed the three-set victory after falling to the Eagles in the first two sets. This loss marks just the second conference loss for Juniata since the first Landmark Conference season in 2007. The team's only other loss came from Scranton in 2017.
  • The Eagles took the first set 25-18, recording 18 kills to the River Hawk's eight.  
  • Juniata narrowly edged past Susquehanna in set two 26-24, each team tallying 15 kills apiece.
  • The River Hawks were victorious in the third and fourth sets, to force a fifth set.
  • The match came down to who would win the fifth set and the River Hawks came out on fire. SU recorded 10 kills to the Eagles right to take the set 15-10 tallying an impressive .562 attack percentage as a team.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Portale again shined with an outstanding 22 kills while Espositio was also in double digits with 16 kills.
  • Beohm, Herestofa and senior captain Kasey Bost (Eldersburg, Md. / Liberty) each recorded double digit numbers in the digs category with 15, 14 and 13 respectively.   
  • Morgan Edwards finished the match with 21 kills, Victoria Taylor and Emma Davis were also in double digits with 18 and 13 respectively while Makenna Hallager put up a team-best 15 digs.
