Esposito Double-Double Not Enough as River Hawks Women’s Basketball Falls to Dickinson

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Sophomore Amalia Esposito (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) notched her second double-double in three games but Esposito's career performance comes up short Wednesday night as the Susquehanna University women's basketball team saw their win streak halted at six. Susquehanna (6-2) dropped a 77-62 decision to the visiting Dickinson College Red Devils (3-5) in non-conference action.

How It Happened
First Quarter
  • Dickinson opened up a 10-2 at 8:06 on a three-pointer by Halie Maeda and never looked back.
  • The River Hawks came within four twice, the last time at 5:26 on an Esposito jumper, before the visitors closed out the first 10 minutes on a 16-7 run.
  • Esposito scored 10 of the team's 15 points in the first quarter while Claudia Maira and Emily Paladino each tallied eight as the duo combined for 4-of-7 shooting from downtown.
 
Second Quarter
  • Susquehanna scored the first two baskets of the second frame to close the gap to 28-19 but the Red Devils responded with a 16-2 run for a 23-point advantage – their biggest of the game – with 2:29 remaining in the half.
  • Hannah Heiring paced Dickinson with eight points in the run as Heiring knocked down a pair of triples.
 
Halftime
  • The Red Devils shot 15-of-40 (.375) from the field in the first half, including 9-of-19 from downtown, to own a 45-26 halftime lead while dominating the glass by a 33-14 margin.
  • Susquehanna was limited to 1-of-6 from behind the three-point arc.
 
Third Quarter
  • Susquehanna edged the Red Devils, 24-23, in the third period as junior captain Erin McQuillen (Cresskill, N.J./Cresskill) tallied nine points.
  • The River Hawks registered their best shooting percentage of the game in the first 10 minutes of the second half, making 8-of-17 shots and taking care of the ball with only two turnovers.
 
Fourth Quarter
  • SU kicked off the final frame with a 12-4 run to pull within 72-62 with 3:02 left in the game as junior guard Nevin Hoenninger (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) completed the three-point play.
  • The Red Devils went 0-for-7 from downtown and connected on just two field goals.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Dickinson's 77 points is the most allowed by the River Hawks this season while SU's 62 points is its lowest total in eight games.
  • The Red Devils posted a +25 rebounding margin, outrebounding Susquehanna, 63-28.
  • Dickinson benefitted from 26 bench points as well as 21 second chance points.
  • Before tonight, the two sides had not met since the 1997-98 season. Susquehanna still leads the all-time series, 21-8, since the series began in 1962. Tonight's victory was the Red Devils' first since a 69-63 win in 1988.
 
Top Performers
  • Esposito dropped career-highs of 25 points and 14 rebounds. She shot 6-fo-13 from the field and 13-of-20 from the free throw line.
  • McQuillen contributed 11 points and five boards while Hoenninger chipped in 10 points and eight caroms.
  • Emily Paladino led all players with 27 points and hauled in eight rebounds to lead the Red Devils to their third win of the season.
