Salem, Va. – The Susquehanna University softball team split Saturday's doubleheader on the second day of the Mountain Mash being hosted by Roanoke College and Virginia Wesleyan University. The River Hawks (2-1) fell in the first game, 5-0, to Roanoke College (3-0), but finished the day strong by defeating Frostburg State University (1-5), 12-3 in five innings.
Game 1

How It Happened
- The game started out slow as the Maroons kept Susquehanna in line, striking out eight of the first nine SU batters.
- Roanoke broke the game open in the bottom of the third when Shanan Hester singled up the middle to knock in two.
- In the fifth inning, Ellasen Spangler connected on two-run RBI double to leftfield. Spangler then scored a run during the inning, giving the Maroons a 5-0 lead.
- The River Hawks connected on three singles in the top of the sixth off the bats of freshmen Kiara Bryant (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) and Katie Koch (West Milton, Pa./Lewisburg Area) and junior Emily Lear (Elmira, N.Y./Thomas Edison).
Inside the Box Score
- Roanoke tallied five runs on 10 hits with no errors while the River Hawks finished with four hits and two errors.
- The Maroons made contact for two doubles.
Top Performers
- Freshman Katie Welker (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Township) stole a base while sophomore Brooke Wiarda (Green Pond, N.J./Morris Knolls) pitched 4.0 innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs with one strikeout in the loss. Freshman Katie Murphy (Havre de Grace, Md./C. Milton Wright) came in relief for the final two innings, yielding three runs on five hits with one strikeout.
- Rebecca Hensley paced the Maroons at the bat as Hensley went 3-for-4 while Emily Salsberry earned the complete game shutout win as Salsberry struck out 11 with no walks.

How It Happened
- Susquehanna got on top early, picking up two early runs in the opening inning. Koch opened the game with a walk and advanced to second on junior captain Kasey Bost's (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) single. Koch then crossed home plate on senior infielder Jackie Gore's (Andover, N.J./Newtown) RBI single up the middle. Senior Jill Ahrens (Clarence, N.Y./Sacred Heart) used a single to score Bost.
- In the top of the third, sophomore infielder Kody Streeter (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) doubled to right center to bring home Welker. Freshman Erin Bean (Watchung, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) then singled to right to drive in Streeter and make it 4-0 in Susquehanna's favor. Sophomore outfielder Katherine Fahsbender (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) doubled down the right field line and Bean came home. In the following at bat, Koch singled to left field and Bryant scored a run. Bost then collected two RBI with a single to left center as the River Hawks doubled their lead to 8-0 in the first three innings.
- Frostburg State got on the board in the bottom of the third with a run.
- Susquehanna then followed up win one run in the fourth as junior Samantha Duplissey (Millersville, Pa./Penn Manor) drilled a ball up the middle to bring home junior infielder Morgan Derrick (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge).
- The Bobcats then trimmed the SU lead to 9-3 in their half of the fourth with a pair of RBI singles.
- Bost wrapped up the scoring in the fifth with a triple to right field, bring home junior Emily Lear (Elmira, N.Y./Thomas Edison) and Koch. Bost would then score the 12th and final run on a wild pitch.
- Sophomore Gabby Bubba (Jefferson, N.J./Pope John XXIII) retired the first two Bobcat batters in the fifth before giving up a walk. Frostburg would generate no more offense as Bubba got the next batter to ground out to end the game.
Inside the Box Score
- Susquehanna posted a season-best 12 runs on a season-high 17 hits with one error. Five of the River Hawks' hits were extra-base hits, including four doubles.
- The Bobcats were held to three runs on seven hits, which were all singles.
Top Performers
- Bost went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, two runs scored, and a triple while Koch, Gore, Streeter, Bryant, and Fahsbender each contributed two hits. Koch also scored three runs for SU.
- Junior Amanda Seckinger (Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown) picked up the win in the circle as Seckinger went 3.0 innings, giving up three hits and two walks. In relief, Bubba allowed two runs on four hits in 2.0 innings with two strikeouts and one walk.
- Seven different Bobcats made contact for Frostburg while Emily Moll dropped to 0-2 on the season as Moll gave up 12 runs on 17 hits and three walks.
