Hebda Homers but Susquehanna Softball Falls Twice at Wilkes

Wilkes-Barre, Pa. – The Susquehanna University softball team had their win streak halted at two Wednesday night as Susquehanna (18-15) lost both at Wilkes University (24-13). The River Hawks succumbed to 5-4 and 3-1 losses in non-conference action.

Game 1
Susquehanna 4, Wilkes 5

How It Happened
  • Rhiannon Aurand retired the River Hawks in order in the top of the seventh to keep the game tied at 4-4.
  • SU gave up a leadoff single in the seventh but then threw out the go-ahead run at second. Wilkes then loaded the bases with a fielder's choice, hit by pitch, and a fielding error. Sophomore Gabby Bubba (Jefferson, N.J./Pope John XXIII) then pitched a pop up for the second out of the inning before Gab Giordano plated the game-winning run on a wild pitch.
  • After Bubba retired the Colonels in order in the bottom of the first inning, Susquehanna took advantage of a two-out fielding error in the outfield as sophomore outfielder Katherine Fahsbender (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII), who drew a two-out walk, crossed home plate for an early 1-0 lead.
  • The River Hawks maintained a one-run lead in the fourth, going up 2-1 when sophomore third baseman Brittany Hebda (Kingston, Pa./Holy Redeemer) connected for her team-leading third home run of the season with two outs on the board.
  • SU stretched the scoring margin to 4-1 with two runs in the fifth following a two-RBI double down the leftfield line by junior outfielder Kasey Bost (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty), bringing home freshmen Erin Bean (Watchung, N.J./Watchung Hills) and Katie Koch (West Milton, Pa./Lewisburg Area).
  • Gracen Staunton rocked a two-out, three-run home run in the Colonels' half of the fifth inning to pull Wilkes even with the River Hawks at 4-4.
  • In the sixth, both pitchers sat down the lineup in order.

Inside the Box Score
  • The River Hawks were held to a mere three hits – their second lowest hit total of the season.
  • Wilkes grabbed five runs on seven hits, three SU errors, two wild pitches, one walk, and one hit by pitch.

Top Performers
  • Bean, Bost, and Hebda all tallied a hit for Susquehanna while Bost drove in two runs.
  • Bubba dropped to 4-3 on the season despite fanning seven Colonel batters. She allowed five runs (none earned) on seven hits. Bubba threw two wild pitches, hit one batter and walked one in her fifth complete game of the season.
  • Staunton tallied two hits in four at-bats with three RBI and two runs scored while Jordyn Kondras went 2-for-3.

Game 2
Susquehanna 1, Wilkes 3

How It Happened
  • Wilkes gained a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the third inning thanks to a two-out, two-run bomb off the bat of Erin Cabry.
  • The Colonels stretched their lead to 3-0 in the fifth as Kondras, who lead off the inning with a single, crossed home plate on Staunton's two-out RBI single.
  • Through the first six innings, Susquehanna was limited to just two hits as Celine Podlesney found a way around the lineup with 10 groundouts, six fly outs, and three strikeouts.
  • The River Hawks looked to rally in the seventh, loading the bases with only one out on the board on two singles and a Wilkes fielding error. Senior designated player Jill Ahrens (Clarence, N.Y./Sacred Heart) helped SU avoid the shutout, coming home on a fielder's choice to Koch. With runners on second and third and two outs, WU escaped the inning without any further damage as Podlesney's final pitch was popped up to end the game.

Inside the Box Score
  • This was just the fourth time this season the River Hawks were held to less than five hits, notching one run on four hits and one Wilkes error.
  • Wilkes put up three runs on eight hits, including a homer and a double, and two SU missteps.

Top Performers
  • Hebda paced Susquehanna at the plate, going 2-for-3.
  • Senior captain Alexa Gonzalez (Northport, N.Y./Northport) was saddled with the loss, falling to 7-5 on the season as Gonzalez gave up three runs (all earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts.
  • Kondras finished the nightcap with a 2-for-3 performance and two runs scored to lead the Colonels.
