Tough Third Quarter Downs Susquehanna Men’s Lacrosse in the Landmark Championship

Elizabethtown, Pa. – The quest for the program's third Landmark Conference championship title came up short for the third-seeded Susquehanna University men's lacrosse team Saturday afternoon. Top-seeded and two-time defending champion, Elizabethtown College (11-7), broke open a 6-4 game with seven unanswered goals in the third quarter to defeat Susquehanna (11-8), 14-6.
 
Junior attackman Michael Hatala (Glen Cove, N.Y./Glen Cove) paced the River Hawks in the season finale with two goals while sophomore attackman Colton Dick (Owings, Md./Northern) finished the day with a goal and an assist.
 
Gaining the Landmark's automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Tournament with today's win, Elizabethtown now awaits the announcement of the 36-team field for the 2019 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Tournament.

How It Happened
  • Etown staked a 2-0 lead in the first quarter with unassisted goals from Nick Cost at 12:29 and Mike Scrafano with 30 seconds to go.
  • Hatala put the River Hawks on the scoreboard with his 17th of the season off an assist from Dick at 13:44. The Blue Jays then rattled off three in a row to widen the gap to 5-1 at 6:56. SU then used goals from Dick and freshman attackman Jack McLaughlin (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) to head into halftime down by only 6-3.
  • Sophomore midfielder Ryan Bucher (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove) won the opening face-off and raced down for his first goal of the season, just six seconds into the third period to pull the River Hawks within 6-4.
  • Elizabethtown responded by unleashing seven straight to stretch its lead to 13-4 with four ticks remaining in the third.
  • Susquehanna won the fourth frame, 2-1, but all three goals were scored in the final four minutes of the game.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Susquehanna earned the edge in ground balls, 31-28, as junior long-stick midfielder Jacob Fox (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) and Bucher led the way with four ground balls each.
  • The River Hawks won the battle at the X with a 13-of-21 effort. Bucher went 8-of-12 while junior Joe Acquaviva (Wyckoff, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) finished 5-of-9.
  • The SU defense also killed all five of Etown's five extra-man opportunities.
  • The Blue Jays outshot SU, 42-26, and held the River Hawks scoreless on four extra-man chances.
 
Top Performers
  • Senior midfielder Jack Gerrity (Scotch Plains-Fanwood, N.J./Scotch Plains Fanwood) and junior defenseman Patrick Donnelly (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) each tallied an assist.
  • Senior captain Dan Murphy (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) paced the defensive effort with three caused turnovers and two ground balls while senior captain Dylan Abplanalp (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) registered nine saves and three ground balls.
  • Scrafano and Cody Richter led the Blue Jays to their third straight Landmark title with two goals and two assists each while Tom Mahoney turned away nine shots in 55:33 minutes of action.
