Muhlenberg Spoils Home- and Season-Opener for Susquehanna Men’s Soccer

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – It was a tough outing for the Susquehanna University men's soccer team Friday night, opening up the 2019 campaign with a 4-1 non-conference loss to Muhlenberg College under lights at Sassafras Field. Sophomore midfielder Joe Armstrong (Lambertville, N.J./South Hunterdon) broke up the Mules' shutout bid in the 73rd minute.

How It Happened
  • Muhlenberg (1-0) broke a scoreless draw in the 36th minute when Erich Buerkert finished a diagonal volley from the left side into the top right corner from about six yards out.
  • Chris Richards gave the Mules a two-goal cushion at 42:08 with one of his two tallies of the night.
  • The River Hawks cut the deficit in half with a set piece goal as Armstrong finished off a corner kick from junior defender Kyle Trainor (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township).
  • The Mules headed into the intermission with a 2-1 advantage and a 9-6 lead in shots while Susquehanna posted a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
  • Goals from Richards and Kevin Hagan in the final three minutes sealed the season-opening win for Muhlenberg.
