River Hawk Men’s Soccer Loses another Heartbreaker

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – A penalty kick goal in the 58th minute proved to be the difference as the Susquehanna University men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 non-conference decision to Wilkes University on the road Wednesday night. Susquehanna (1-5-0) lost its fourth game in a row while Wilkes (3-2-1) stretched its unbeaten streak to three games.

How It Happened
  • Wilkes edged the River Hawks, 8-7, in shots and 3-1 in corner kicks in the first half.
  • SU received quality looks from junior midfielder Alex Bellot (Gaithersburg, Md./T.S. Wootton) and first-years Shayne Davies (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) and Michael Morelli (Wyckoff, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) but Russell Rauh was up to the challenge on each one in the first 45 minutes.
  • The tables flipped in the second half as Susquehanna posted an 8-7 shot margin and corner kicks were equal at four apiece.
  • Junior defender Jacob Butzler (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) gave the River Hawks their first scoring opportunity of the second half at 57:05 before Kyle Bentz tallied the eventual game-winning goal 35 seconds later by converting a penalty kick.
  • Susquehanna had a flurry of offense in the final 30 seconds of the game with an on-target header by senior captain Scott Misson (Belford, N.J./Christian Brothers) and back-to-back corners.
