Lynch’s Strong Play Keeps Susquehanna Women’s Basketball Undefeated in Landmark Action

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – First-year guard Kaitlyn Lynch (Andover, N.J./Newton) tallied season-bests of 16 points and eight rebounds to help the Susquehanna University women's basketball team remain perfect in Landmark Conference action Saturday afternoon. Susquehanna (10-3, 2-0 LC) returned to league play with a 72-62 victory over the visiting Goucher College Gophers (4-9, 0-2 LC) for its third win in a row.

How It Happened
First Quarter
  • Susquehanna shot 50-percent from the field, including 4-of-7 from distance, to win the first quarter and post an 18-11 advantage.
  • The Gophers held a brief 4-3 lead at 7:45 on a fast-break layup by Jorryn Avery.
  • Sophomore guard Sadie Comfort (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) and Lynch led the River Hawks in the quarter with six and four points, respectively. Comfort hit back-to-back three-pointers in a one-minute span to give SU a 16-7 lead at 1:50.
 
Second Quarter
  • The River Hawks cooled off a bit in terms of shooting, dropping 20-percent, while Goucher witnessed an upswing in its shots, improving from 30-percent in the first half to 37.5-percent.
  • The Gophers worked down their seven-point deficit to just a 29-28 gap at the break behind nine points from Alayna McFadden and six from Avery.
 
Halftime
  • McFadden and Anise Williams led all scorers at halftime with nine points each while junior captain Erin McQuillen (Cresskill, N.J./Cresskill) paced the River Hawks with eight points on the strength of two three-pointers.
  • Susquehanna shot nearly 42-percent from the floor, including 45.5-percent from behind the three-point arc, while holding a slight 19-17 edge on the boards.
  • The Gophers finished shooting 34.5-percent for the half and were a dismal 2-of-11 from downtown.
  • Additionally, Goucher converted 12 River Hawk turnovers into 12 points.
 
Third Quarter
  • SU started the second half with a 17-9 run to create separation and boast a 46-37 advantage with 1:30 remaining in the quarter as junior forward Alanna Connolly (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central) scored the final four points of the run.
  • Williams notched the final four points of the third frame to trim the hosts' lead to 46-41.
 
Fourth Quarter
  • Susquehanna broke open the game with a 15-5 run at the beginning of the fourth for its biggest lead of the game, 61-47, at 5:04. Lynch scored the final 10 points of the run to put the River Hawks in the driver's seat.
  • The Gophers would respond with a 12-4 run over the next three minutes to pull within 65-59 but would get no closer as SU closed out the game with a 5-for-6 effort at the free throw line.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • The River Hawks tallied a season-high 10 blocks as junior guard Nevin Hoenninger (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and sophomore forward Olivia Brandt (Bethlehem, Pa./Notre Dame) each had three.
  • Susquehanna outrebounded the Gophers, 45-31, behind Lynch's eight boards.
  • SU's bench came up big with 46 points, including 32 in the second half.
  • Twenty-six of Goucher's 62 points came off of 24 River Hawk turnovers.
  • The River Hawks now lead the series with Goucher, 24-2, and have won 14 straight over the Gophers.
 
Top Performers
  • Lynch led a trio of reserves in double-digit scoring with a team-best 16 while Connolly finished with a season-best 13 points and Comfort contributed a season-high 11 points.
  • McQuillen was the only starter in double figures with 14 as she drained three three-pointers and went 5-of-6 at the line. She also had six rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
  • Williams notched a game-high 27 points on 7-of-11 shooting and a 13-for-15 showing at the charity stripe to lead the Gophers while McFadden collected a double-double on 19 points and a game-best 12 rebounds.
