River Hawks Men’s Basketball Sweeps Season Series with Goucher

TOWSON, Md. – Four starters scored in double digits Saturday afternoon as the Susquehanna University men's basketball team snapped their two-game skid. Susquehanna (13-6, 6-2 LC) picked up a 78-57 Landmark Conference road win over the Goucher College Gophers (4-15, 1-7 LC) to remain in a three-way for first-place in the league standings with Drew University and the University of Scranton.

Susquehanna 78, Goucher 57

How It Happened
First Half
  • Sophomore guard Lukas Yurasits (New York, N.Y./Berkeley Carroll) notched the game's opening basket before Goucher posted a 10-4 lead at 15:36.
  • Back-to-back buckets by junior captain Bryce Butler (Abingdon, Md./Suffield Academy) had the River Hawks within two and then a Butler triple broke a more than three-minute scoring lull by both sides to hand Susquehanna the lead once again, 11-10.
  • The lead would change hands five more times before SU turned around a 24-23 home team edge in a six-point margin by ending the half on an 11-4 run to stake a 34-28 halftime advantage.

Halftime
  • The halftime difference came from the River Hawks' 7-for-10 effort at the free throw line as both teams made 12 field goals, including three three-pointers, in the first half.
  • Junior captain Matt LaCorte (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) paced SU with eight points while sophomore guard Danny Frauenheim (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J./Point Pleasant Beach) dished out five assists and senior captain Zachary Knecht (Parkland, Fla./Stoneman Douglas) hauled in five rebounds.
  • As a team, Susquehanna shot 37.5-percent from the field and committed just nine turnovers.
  • Dwayne Morton led all scorers with nine points while the Gophers shot 52.2-percent from the field and boasted an 18-16 edge in rebounds.

Second Half
  • The River Hawks found their offensive rhythm over the final 20 minutes as Susquehanna put up 44 points by making nearly 54-percent of its shots, including five triples, and going 9-of-13 at the line.
  • SU's stingy defense came into play as well as the River Hawks converted 10 Goucher turnovers into 14 points.
  • The opening shot of the second half was a LaCorte three-ball for a nine-point advantage before the Gophers closed the gap to six three times but could not get closer the rest of the way.
  • Susquehanna outscored the hosts, 27-9, over the next 10 minutes to put the game out of reach as the River Hawks built a 24-point lead (68-44) at 5:36. SU drained four triples, including consecutive three-balls by Yurasits, and an old-fashioned three-point play by Butler.
  • During SU's big run, Goucher missed six shots, including three from distance, went 1-for-5 at the charity stripe, and turned the ball over five times, including a five-second violation.

Inside the Box Score
  • Susquehanna shot over 40-percent for the first time in its last three games as the River Hawks posted a 45.0-field goal percentage (27-60) with eight three-pointers.
  • The River Hawks grabbed a 35-30 advantage in rebounds as Knecht pulled down a game-best eight boards for a 12-2 edge in second chance points.
  • SU finished with a 25-6 margin in points from turnovers as Goucher turned the ball over 27 times compared to 16 by the River Hawks.
  • Susquehanna dominates the all-time series with the Gophers, 24-6, as the River Hawks have won 12 straight, including sweeping this year's season series with an 87-67 come-from-behind win at home on Jan. 11 and today's 21-point victory.
