Susquehanna Women’s Basketball Back in the Win Column

TOWSON, Md. – The Susquehanna University women's basketball team snapped their four-game skid Saturday afternoon as four starters eclipsed the double-digit point mark. Susquehanna (12-7, 4-4 LC) turned around a five-point third period deficit into a 60-52 Landmark Conference road win, handing the Goucher College Gophers (4-15, 0-8 LC) their 13th straight loss.
 
The win bumps the River Hawks into a three-way tie for fourth in the Landmark standings with Drew University and Moravian College.

How It Happened
First Period
  • The first four minutes of the game featured four lead changes before Susquehanna settled the game down and closed out the first 10 minutes on a 12-5 run fueled by seven points and two steals from sophomore Amalia Esposito (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour).
  • Esposito paced the River Hawks in the frame with nine points and four rebounds as SU headed into second stanza with a 17-12 lead.
 
Second Period
  • Goucher took control in the second period, tying the game three times and then outscoring the River Hawks, 5-1, over the final 1:25 of the half to claim a 30-28 advantage at halftime.
  • Anise Williams led the home team with eight points as the Gophers shot 38.9-percent with two three-pointers.
 
Halftime
  • Esposito led Susquehanna at the break with nine points and eight rebounds while the River Hawks outrebounded the hosts, 26-20.
  • Alayna McFadden posted 10 first-half points while Goucher shot 36.4-percent for the half. The Gophers also turned six SU miscues into five points.
 
Third Period
  • The Gophers, who would shot 12.5-percent for the next 10 minutes, stretched their lead to five behind a McFadden bucket and a Kyani Quarles free throw at 8:23.
  • Sophomore guard Sadie Comfort (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) tallied five points as Susquehanna put together a 9-5 run to reclaim a one-point lead at 5:42 – a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the game.
  • Jorryn Avery knotted the game (37-37) for the final time with a pair of free throws at 4:33 and then the River Hawks scored the final six points.
 
Fourth Period
  • Susquehanna notched eight of the first 12 points of the fourth frame to boast its biggest lead of 10 points (51-41) at 4:44.
  • The Gophers outplayed SU over the next three minutes as Williams (5) and Avery combined for nine points in Goucher's 11-4 run to pull within three at 1:11.
  • Junior guard Nevin Hoenninger (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) drained a three-ball with 42 seconds on the clock to seal the win for the River Hawks.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Susquehanna went 14-for-19 (73.7%) at the free throw line while shooting 35.6-percent for the game with four triples.
  • The River Hawks registered a 51-40 rebounding advantage thanks to 10 boards from Esposito.
  • SU now owns an all-time series record of 25-2 against the Gophers, having won 15 in a row. The River Hawks swept the season series this year with a 72-62 win in front of the home crowd and today's eight-point triumph.
 
Top Performers
  • Esposito's fifth double-double of the season on 13 points and 10 rebounds paced Susquehanna in opening the month of February with a win.
  • Hoenninger and junior captain Erin McQuillen (Cresskill, N.J./Cresskill) each contributed 11 points while McQuillen hauled in nine boards, dished out four assists, and had two steals.
  • In her first start of the season, Comfort chipped in 10 points with a pair of triples.
  • McFadden finished with a game-best 16 points while Williams had 13 points and nine caroms to lead Goucher.
