River Hawks Women’s Basketball Hold off Greyhounds’ Fourth-Quarter Comeback

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Four River Hawks players scored in double figures as the Susquehanna University women's basketball team (14-10, 6-7 LC) were able to slow down the Moravian College Greyhounds (14-10, 7-6 LC) and keep their Landmark Conference playoff hopes alive. Susquehanna came away with a 66-60 victory Wednesday night to split the season series, holding off Moravian's fourth-quarter rally.
 
Heading into this Saturday's regular-season finale with Juniata College in Orlando W. Houts Gymnasium, Susquehanna is tied with Drew University (15-9, 6-7 LC) at fifth in the conference following tonight's River Hawk win and Drew's loss to the University of Scranton.

How It Happened
First Quarter
  • Moravian led twice in the first six minutes of the game before Susquehanna jumped out to a 15-10 lead at 3:20.
  • The River Hawks headed into the second frame with a 17-13 advantage after forcing the Greyhounds to commit eight turnovers.
 
Second Quarter
  • Susquehanna used a 13-6 run to start the second stanza and boast an 11-point lead at 1:36 on a three-pointer by junior guard Alexa Petrozzino (East Hanover, N.J./Hanover Park).
  • The River Hawks defense was stingy in holding Moravian scoreless from behind the three-point line and to just three made field goals.
  • Both teams shot 50.0-percent from the free throw line as SU carried a 30-21 margin into halftime.

Halftime
  • Sophomore Amalia Esposito (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) and Nadine Ewald each had seven points to lead their respective teams at the break.
  • Senior forward Rachel Sweger (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area) grabbed four boards to help SU post a 20-16 rebounding edge.
 
Third Quarter
  • The River Hawks shot over 64-percent in the third frame as they drained all three three-pointers to stake a 13-point lead twice in the quarter, including taking a 51-38 advantage into the final 10 minutes of action.
 
Fourth Quarter
  • Moravian turned around a 14-point deficit into a three-point game, 54-51, with 5:06 remaining by putting together an 11-0 run.
  • The River Hawks went 10-for-12 from the charity stripe over the final 3:15 to close out the game.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • Susquehanna scored nine fast-break points off of eight steals.
  • The Greyhounds shot 23.5-percent from beyond the three-point line compared to 50.0-percent for the River Hawks.
  • SU finished the game 14-for-19 (73.7%) from the line while the visitors were 12-for-20.
  • This is Susquehanna's first win over the Greyhounds since a 61-51 win in O.W. Houts Gym on Jan. 27, 2018, and ends a three-game skid for the River Hawks against Moravian. SU is now 19-40 in the all-time series.
 
Top Performers
  • Esposito and sophomore forward Olivia Brandt (Bethlehem, Pa./Notre Dame) both finished with 12 points, leading all scorers for the River Hawks.
  • Juniors Nevin Hoenninger (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and Madi Welliver (Turbotville, Pa./Warrior Run) grabbed seven boards each to give Susquehanna a 38-35 rebounding edge for the game.
  • The Moravian Greyhounds were led by Ewald's double-double of 24 points and 16 rebounds as Moravian is now 2-2 in its last four games.
