River Hawk Softball Opens 2020 with Two Wins

SALEM, Va. – Junior Gabby Bubba (Jefferson, N.J./Pope John XXIII) pitched a gem and first-year Morgan Henry (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) cracked her first collegiate home run as the Susquehanna University softball team kicked off the 2020 campaign with two wins at the Mountain Mash Saturday afternoon. Susquehanna (2-0) opened up with a 2-1 victory over Fredonia State University (2-2) before holding on for an 8-5 win over University of Pittsburgh at Bradford (0-4).

How It Happened
  • All three runs were scored in the first two innings.
  • Fredonia claimed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a two-out RBI single by Eva FitzSimmons to bring home Amber Piniewski, who reached base on a fielder's choice, stole second, and went to third on a ground out.
  • The River Hawks claimed a 2-1 lead in the top of the second as junior Madison Lane (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) connected on a one-out, two-RBI double to left field, scoring first-year Ashley Warner (Bloomsbury, N.J./Phillipsburg) and sophomore Katie Koch (West Milton, Pa./Lewisburg Area).
  • Bubba then went to work as she retired 18 of the last 19 batters, including striking out the last five batters, while throwing only 70 pitches.

  • Susquehanna played a clean, efficient game, scoring two runs on four hits with no errors.
  • Half of the River Hawks' hits were extra-base contacts.
  • Fredonia connected on five singles.
 
Top Performers
  • Warner led SU at the plate with a 2-for-3 effort while Lane went 1-for-2 with two RBI and a stolen base.

How It Happened
  • Senior Amanda Seckinger (Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown) retired the Panthers' side in order in the top of the first before Susquehanna came out swinging, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first.
  • Senior captain Kasey Bost (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) started the scoring for the River Hawks as Bost connected on an RBI double to bring home sophomore Kiara Bryant (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) after drawing a lead-off walk and advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt. Bost advanced to third on a ground out before scoring on a Warner RBI single. Henry finished off the scoring by cracking a two-run shot over the leftfield fence, bringing home Warner as well.
  • Pitt-Bradford got two back in the third when the Panthers scored on a River Hawk error and a ground out.
  • SU tripled its lead to 8-2 with four more runs in its half of the third as Bost came home on an RBI single by Henry drawing a leadoff walk and then junior Katherine Fahsbender (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) made contact for a three-RBI triple with two outs on the board.
  • The Panthers cut the lead in half with three runs in the fifth with a two-run triple and an RBI single.
  • Bubba relieved Seckinger with bases loaded for the final two outs of the sixth before retiring the Bradford side in order in the seventh.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • The River Hawks tallied eight runs on seven hits, including three extra-base hits, while committing four errors.
  • Pitt-Bradford scored five runs with seven hits as well while making one error.
 
Top Performers
  • Henry finished the afternoon by going 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs as well as her first career home run.
  • Bost went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.
  • Seckinger (1-0) earned the win in the circle, giving up two earned runs on seven hits with one strikeout, while Bubba notched the save with 1.2 innings of work, allowing no hits and striking out one.
  • Betty Fratercangelo led the Panthers with a 2-for-3 effort and a run scored.
