River Hawks Baseball Wins Second Straight

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Sophomore Jake Ramezzana (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) struck out nine in 4.2 innings of relief while senior Craig Roumes (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) went 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and two RBI to lead the Susquehanna University baseball team to their second consecutive win at the Snowbird Baseball Classic in Florida on Wednesday. Susquehanna (3-4) picked up a gritty 5-3 victory over Heidelberg University (5-5).

Susquehanna 5, Heidelberg 3
How It Happened
  • The Student Princes staked a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Keaton Mark connected on an RBI double down the leftfield line to score lead-off hitter, Zack Doran, who got on base with a single and then stole second, for the 1-0 advantage. Heidelberg doubled its lead following back-to-back singles, including an RBI single by Marc Ochoa to bring home Mark.
  • Susquehanna ended the first inning by catching Eric DeVore stealing and a fielder's choice out at second.
  • Heidelberg added another run in the third as Elliot Kurtz made contact for a one-out single to right center to drive in Mark for his second score of the game. Ramezzana, who relieved junior Luke Tuttle (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) at the top of the inning, struck out the next batter and pitched a ground out to get out of the inning down 3-0.
  • After Ramezzana sat down the Student Princes in order, junior Chris Corrado (Tuckahoe, N.Y./Tuckahoe) hit a two-run, two-out single to right center with bases loaded to score Roumes and sophomore Adam Schreck (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan), cutting Heidelberg's lead to 3-2.
  • Ramezzana once again retired the side in order in the fifth and the River Hawks tacked on two more in their half of the fifth for their first lead, 4-3, of the game. Senior Alex Burman (Wallingford, Pa./Episcopal) scored junior Steve Lorenz (Feasterville-Trevose, Pa./William Penn Charter), who drew a lead-off walk and went to second on a balk. Then Burman scored on Roumes' second double of the afternoon.
  • The bats were quiet for both teams in the sixth before SU tallied an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI single by Roumes to bring home Burman, who reached on a fielding error, stole second, and went to third on a throwing error.

Inside the Box Score
  • Both sides finished with nine hits while Heidelberg made three errors and the River Hawks posted a clean sheet on the defensive side.
  • Susquehanna hit three extra-base hits to the Student Princes' one double.

  • Along with Roumes, Corrado was the only other River Hawk with a multiple-hit effort as he went 2-for-5 at the plate as the lead-off hitter with two RBI.
  • Ramezzana (1-0) picked up his first win of the season as he fanned nine and walked three of the 19 batters faced. He allowed one earned run on one hit in 4.2 innings of work.
  • Senior Bobby Grigas (Frackville, Pa./North Schuylkill) notched his second save of the season as Grigas pitched the last 2.1 innings of the game, yielding only two hits. He faced 10 batters, striking out four and walking just one.
