Box Score BABSON PARK, MA - The Susquehanna Volleyball team came all the way back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Babson Beavers in five sets on Friday night. The Beavers are currently receiving votes and were the first team to miss out on the AVCA Division III Top 25 rankings.
The first set was fairly even between both teams, as the score was tied 21-21 after a service error by Babson. The Beavers, however, were able to take the last four points of the set and come away with the win. In the second set of play, Babson lead throughout the majority of the match. Susquehanna took a late 17-16 lead over the Beavers, but a 11-2 run from the Babson sealed the win and gave them a commanding 2-0 match-lead.
Despite all the momentum being in the hands of the Beavers, the River Hawks turned the tide in the third set, going on several runs that allowed them to build a comfortable lead. Babson was able to pull within two points, making the score 21-19 late in the third set, but Susquehanna scored the final four points to secure the win, as late kills from
Riley O'Dowd and
Brooke LaCesa helped to seal the deal.
The fourth set was also a back and forth affair, as neither team gained larger than a four-point advantage. The Beavers were on the cusp of a win, as they were one point from a game winner, but the River Hawks stormed back for four straight points, capped off by an O'Dowd kill to force a decisive fifth set.
On the doorstep of a huge comeback, and riding a wave of momentum and adrenaline, Susquehanna jumped to a 7-1 lead, as
Lizzie Herestofa capped off the big run with a service ace. With a comfortable lead, the River Hawks were able to slowly work their way to the 15 point mark, as
Madison Rockey finished the match with a kill.
O'Dowd led the way for the team's offensive attack notching 20 kills to go along with a hitting percentage of . 340. LaCesa contributed 14 kills and
Rosina Esposito finished with a double-double after recording 15 kills and 13 digs.
Herestofa had another excellent night, as the senior libero collected a career high 40 digs, while also adding eight assists and three service aces. Rockey ended the night with 43 assists and also contributed 12 digs.
