Tom Eclipses 400 Wins As Volleyball Tops Drew, Moravian Saturday

HUNTINGDOWN, PA (October 2, 2021) -- Susquehanna University women's volleyball head coach Kuuipo Tom eclipsed the 400 win mark Saturday, picking up the win with a 3-2 victory over Drew University in the first of two Landmark College victories for the River Hawks Saturday in play from Juniata College. SU also picked up a 3-0 victory over Moravian University in the second match of the day. 

The 400th victory was just the latest milestone in a fantastic coaching career for Tom, who is the winningest coach in program history. Below are some of Tom's biggest wins in his career. 
  • 1st W at Susquehanna - 3-2 at King's (9/6/2003)
  • 100th W - 3-2 at Gettysburg on 9/27/2008
  • 200th W - 3-2 at Haverford on 9/1/2013
  • 300th W - 3-1 home vs Messiah on 10/8/2016
  • 390th W (1st NCAA Tournament Win) - 3-0 vs. Westminster at Johns Hopkins on 11/15/2019
  • 400th W - 3-2 vs. Drew on 10/2/2021
After today's wins, Tom is ranked No. 54 on the active NCAA wins list with 401, right behind Jonathan Penn of Vassar College with 402. He also ranks in the top 60 in all of NCAA Division III in winning percentage. 

Match 1 - Susquehanna 3, Drew 2
The milestone win for Tom did not come easy against first-year program Drew University, which fought back from a 2-0 deficit to the River Hawks before SU battled back in the fifth set to take a 16-14 win in the final stanza for a 25-22, 25-14, 25-27, 22-25, 17-15 victory over the Rangers. 

Susquehanna (11-4) hit well in the opening set with a match-high 16 kills, and followed that up in the second set by hitting .206 while holding Drew to just six terminations in taking a 2-0 match lead. 

Drew had it's offense come to life in the third set, but Susquehanna led the game for the majority of the time including taking a 24-20 lead to set up four match points. The River Hawks wouldn't be able to put away Drew as it went on a 5-0 run to take a 25-24 lead. Riley O'Dowd posted a kill to make it 25-all, but DU chalked up the next two points to make it a 2-1 match score. 

The momentum for Drew (12-3) carried over to the fourth set, as the Rangers scored eight of the first 10 points to take an 8-2 lead. SU stormed back with a 9-3 run to tie the match at 11 on a kill by Rosina Esposito. With the score tied at 18-all, Drew went on a 4-0 run and SU couldn't get back into it as Drew took the set 25-22.

In the fifth, the two teams battled back and forth with the score being tied eight times throughout the stanza. With the score tied at 15, Esposito hammered a kill to make it 16-15 in favor of SU and followed that with a match-securing kill to give landmark triumph to Tom. 

Esposito led SU in kills with 25, adding 31 digs as well in a massive double-double. Setter Madison Rockey also contributed a big double-double of 45 assists and 18 digs, and libero Lizzie Herestofa recorded a career-high 39 digs along with seven assists in the win. 

Brooke LaCesa tallied 11 kills and five digs, and O'Dowd finished with 12 kills, seven digs and three blocks. Paige Sfiroudis was the main line of defense at the net for Susquehanna, blocking six DU attacks. Megan Nelson also finished with 11 digs. 

Match 2: Susquehanna 3, Moravian 0
The second match of the day was much different for the River Hawks, who controlled action and forced Moravian into -.050 hitting for the match in the 25-23, 25-8 and 25-16 win. 

In the opening stanza, the Greyhounds led 21-19 late in the stanza after a block by Jenna Deegan. Following a timeout by SU, the River Hawks came out and battled back to tie the match on a block by Esposito and Sfiroudis. MU regained the lead at 23-22, but Susquehanna rattled off three in a row highlighted by two blocks from Sfiroudis. 

The second set was all Susquehanna, hitting .394 while the Greyhounds managed just four kills as SU went up two sets. The momentum continued into the third, with Susquehanna securing the sweep with a 25-16 win. 

Esposito totaled 13 kills for the River Hawks, finishing with 17 digs and three assisted blocks as well. Sfiroudis had a massive game for SU posting 12 total blocks, a career-high, while adding seven kills on .438 hitting. Kody Dillon also registered five kills and four blocks, and LaCesa totaled seven assisted rejections. 

Kiera Roach led all River Hawks with 18 assists, also posting nine digs, while Herestofa, Ryan Rorls and Nelson tallied 19, 15 and 13 digs for SU, respectively. With the win, Susquehanna has now won six in a row.
