SELINSGROVE, PA (October 23, 2021) -- The Susquehanna University volleyball team reached 20 wins for the eighth straight season, as the River Hawks topped both Eastern University and Eastern Mennonite University in action from the Bromwyn Keener/Amanda Swazey SUperstar Invitational Saturday in O.W. Houts Gymnasium. The River Hawks won with scores over Eastern 25-22, 25-15 and 25-15, while topping EMU 25-14, 25-8, 25-16 in non-conference play.
Match 1 - Susquehanna 3, Eastern 0
In a match-up of regionally-ranked teams, Susquehanna had no issue with the Eagles of Eastern thanks to a dominating defensive output that included 10 blocks in the match. SU held Eastern to .099 hitting on the day, forcing the Eagles (19-3) into 23 errors on the day.
Brooke Lacesa led the offensive output SU, as she finished with 10 kills on 24 swings, posting a hitting percentage of .333. She also added four assisted blocks on the match. Junior
Rosina Esposito finished with eight terminations and 10 digs, while senior
Riley O'Dowd tallied seven kills as well.
Kody Dillon finished with six kills and three assisted rejections, and
Paige Sfiroudis had seven total blocks. Senior
Lizzie Herestofa led the team with 20 digs, and sophomore setter
Madison Rockey finished with a team-leading three service aces in addition to her 27 assists and nine digs.
Megan Nelson also tallied nine digs in the win.
SU hit .238 (34-9-105) for the match. Logan Martin tallied a match-high 12 kills for Eastern, while Grace Casagrande finished with 19 digs.
Match 2 - Susquehanna 3, Eastern Mennonite 0
The River Hawks started fast against EMU (9-10) in the second match of the day, and outscored the Royals 56-25 on the day in earning the straight set victory. The defense was once again strong, as Eastern Mennonite hit -.061 for the match as it had 26 hitting errors on 98 swings.
Esposito was excellent in the second match of the day, tallying 11 kills on just 19 total attacks, hitting .579 while tallying four aces, three blocks and six digs. O'Dowd added seven kills on 13 attempts, while first-year
Amanda Gore posted six terminations in addition to her four assisted blocks.
Emily Kowalski tallied three kills as well for SU, and Herestofa finished with 11 digs to pace Susquehanna. Rockey and
Keira Roach combined for 25 assists, as the team finished with a hitting clip of .281. SU also registered 11 service aces while posting just two receiving errors.
