SELINSGROVE, PA -
Samantha Chillis' goal in her final regular season game as a River Hawk pushed Susquehanna to a 1-0 win over visiting Goucher College. Despite what the low score may indicate, the River Hawks dominated possession throughout the game, helping to lead them to the win.
Before the game, eleven seniors were honored for their four years at Susquehanna and the accomplishments as members of the soccer team and as students.
Julia Baringer,
Samantha Chillis,
Marley Clendenin,
Mackenzie Dickey,
Sarah Gallahan,
Casey Grehan,
Caroline Lewis,
Allie Stagg,
Anna Werner,
Chloe Wieczkowski, and
Erin Wilson were recognized pregame, as each player was apart of the great run that has seen the River Hawks reach the Landmark Conference Championship in 2018 and 2019, while also winning the championship in 2018.
Once the game began, the control of the game was clearly with the River Hawk eleven, as they dominated possession of the ball. The defense was excellent against the Gophers, as Goucher struggled to get any sort of ball movement towards the net.
Throughout the first half, Susquehanna had good looks to score, but were thwarted by strong play from the Gopher keeper and her surrounding defense, as they recorded five saves. The home team was awarded six corners in the period, but could not make anything out of the opportunities.
The second half saw the same offensive pressure for the River Hawks, and they finally came through in the 55th minute, thanks to a pair of seniors in their final regular season game at Susquehanna. Off a throw in,
Anna Werner was able to shake her defender and get a clear look at her teammates in the box, passing to
Samantha Chillis who was rose over her defender, and head the pass into the goal. The goal gave Chillis her third goal of the season and the ninth of her career as a River Hawk.
Even after securing the lead, Susquehanna did not let up, continuing their strong offensive attack. The team almost scored a game sealing goal in the 85', but the shot from Werner hit the right post and deflected to the Gopher goalie who was able to secure the ball.
Defensively, the team was strong all game, as they did not allowed Goucher to attempt any shots on goal, making the early second half goal stand for the win. The back line held strong throughout the 90 minutes, leading to an easy day for
Chloe Wieczkowski, who picked up her eighth win in goal this season.
The team extended their win streak to eight games with the victory, their longest since an eight game win streak in the 2018 championship season. The 2018 team followed that streak with a tie before winning two more games, to make that streak 11 straight games without a loss. The 2021 team will look to surpass that streak as they head into the Landmark Conference Playoffs next week.
