WASHINGTON D.C. - The Susquehanna University Men's soccer team fell to the top-seeded Catholic University Cardinals on Tuesday night, losing by a score of 4-0, concluding their 2021 season. The season marked the highest win total since the 2015 season, when the team finished 9-7-2.
The game went the way of the Cardinals rather quickly, as they were awarded a penalty kick in the seventh minute, which they converted to take a 1-0 lead. Less than a minute later,
Kevin Ayoso had an excellent shot on goal, but the kick was saved by the Catholic keeper.
The game continued to lean towards the way of Catholic, and they were able to extend their lead in the 31st minute, a lead they would hold until halftime. At the half, the Cardinals held a 12-4 shot advantage, and 4-1 advantage in corners.
The River Hawks had another excellent shot to get back in the game, this time at the outset of the seocnd half, but
Joe Armstrong's shot missed just high, hitting the crossbar and richocheting out to Brian Mckee who's subsequent shot was saved. Catholic responded three minutes later with a goal, effectively putting the game out of reach for Susquehanna.
Susquehanna would fire off three more shots in the half, but were not able to find the back of the net. The Cardinals would score one more time, in the 87th minute to seal their victory, ending the Susquehanna season.
Overall, Catholic out shot Susquehanna 22-10, with nine shots on goal.
Gerrit Stech stopped five of the Cardinal shots in the semifinal matchup.
On the season,
Michael Morelli finished as the team leader in goals with nine scores, good for second in the Landmark Conference during the regular season. He was also tops on the team with 22 points.
Adrian Dilascio ended the season as the team leader in assists, tallying six on the season to go with six goals. Both players will return to lead the offense next season, as they will look to make back-to-back playoff appearances since 2016 and 2017, when the team lost back-to-back opening round playoff games.
