WILLIAMSPORT, PA (November 28, 2021) -- The Susquehanna University women's basketball team allowed only 11 first-half points Sunday at Lycoming College, rolling to a 62-43 non-conference win in action from Lamade Gymnasium.
The 11 first-half points were the fewest since allowing just 11 to Goucher College back on February 3, 2018 in a 77-24 win over the Gophers. The two points in the first quarter were the fewest ever allowed in a game since NCAA women's basketball switched to quarters back in 2015-16.
The River Hawks (5-1) opened a 11-2 lead after the first 10 minutes after forcing Lycoming (1-6) into 1-13 (7.7 percent) shooting in the opening stanza. Susquehanna took a 3-0 lead on an
Olivia Brandt triple, and Lycoming wouldn't get onto the board until 5:46 of the first quarter on an Alyssa Zorbaugh jumper.
Senior
Amanda Lemire connected on a three-pointer on the next possession, followed by a triple from graduate student
Erin McQuillen and a jumper from
Olivia Ciullo just before the first-quarter break to take a nine-point lead into the second.
Brandt finished the 10-0 run for the River Hawks with a jumper on the first possession of the second quarter before Allison Butler snapped a 6:19 stretch without points for the Warriors to make it 13-4. Lycoming cut the lead to nine at 16-7, but SU answered with a 7-0 run to take a 23-7 edge with 6:16 left in the first half.
Susquehanna would increase its lead up to 20 with 30 seconds to play in the first half, as
Sadie Comfort nailed a three-pointer to send the game halftime with SU up 31-11. After the halftime break, Lycoming got as close as 13 with 3:51 to play in the third, but the River Hawks came right back with an 8-0 run to take a 21-point edge after two free-throws from Lemire.
The River Hawk edge would swell up to as 24 midway through the fourth, as SU rolled to the victory in which it never trailed. Every SU player got minutes on Sunday, as Lemire finished with 10 points, five assists and four rebounds. Brandt tallied another double-double with 10 points and 10 caroms, while McQuillen and
Kaitlyn Lynch each registered nine apiece.
Senior
Megan Emlet tallied six points, two assists and three rebounds in just seven minutes, while Ciullo tallied five points and four boards in 12 minutes. First-year
Alicia Goldenziel also scored her first career points Sunday. Susquehanna shot a strong 40.0 percent (10-25) from behind the arc against Lycoming, while going 8-of-11 from the line (72.7 percent).
Lycoming was paced by the eight points from Jessica Shaver, while Ashley Yoh had seven points and six rebounds in the loss. The Warriors were 14-of-56 on field goals (25.0 percent), while hitting on just three of their attempts from three-point land.
