Scranton Tops Field Hockey 2-1 In Overtime In Landmark Semifinals

SCRANTON, PA (November 3, 2021) -- University of Scranton forward Katie Redding scored 24 seconds into overtime to give her squad a 2-1 overtime win over the Susquehanna University field hockey team in the 2021 Landmark Conference semifinals in play from Weiss Field.

With the loss, the River Hawks (16-4) will sit and await a possible at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, announced late Sunday. Scranton (16-1) advances to the Landmark Conference title game against the winner of top-seed Moravian University and Catholic University.

The River Hawks came out quick and had a chance off a penalty corner 2:30 into the contest but a Sam Banks shot was saved by Clare Maguire of Scranton. Each team had one shot on goal in the first quarter, with the majority of the play coming in the midfield.

In the second quarter, SU started to get more pressure as the game opened up for both teams. The opening breakthrough came in favor of the River Hawks, taking advantage of a penalty corner in the 26th minute. On the play, Katie Bucher had her first shot attempt bounce over the defenders stick which freed her to fire a low shot into the cage for her fourth tally of the season at 25:35.

That's how the game would go to halftime, as Mackenzie Bross made a nice save late in the half on an Amanda Gerenze shot to keep SU ahead after 30 minutes. After the intermission, Scranton would take advantage of two penalty corners, as Bridget Abraldes tipped a shot from Redding from the top for her ninth goal of the season.

The next good opportunity for SU came in the 51st minute, as Ashley Schreffler had her shot denied on a great save from Maguire. Scranton put the pressure on late in the period, but Bross and her defensive teammates were up to the task denying three shots off four penalty corners to send the game to overtime.

In the extra session, Scranton started the period with the ball and scored on their first shot of the stanza as Redding collected a ball tipped away on the left side and found the corner of the cage for the game-winner.

Scranton finished with an 11-5 lead in shots, while also holding an 11-5 edge in penalty corners. Bross made five saves for the match, including three in the fourth quarter, and Bucher led the team with two shots including the goal.

The River Hawks will await a bid, but if the season has concluded, they finished tied for the most regular-season victories in program history.
