No. 9 Juniata Tops Volleyball In Landmark Semifinals

HUNTINGDON, PA (November 3, 2021) -- The Susquehanna University volleyball team, which came into the Landmark Conference Tournament as the No. 4 seed, was knocked off by top seed and No. 9 Juniata College 3-0 in action from Memorial Gymnasium. The Eagles defeated the River Hawks with scores of 25-13, 25-19 and 25-12.

With the loss, the River Hawks (22-6) will now sit and wait to see if they will receive a bid into the NCAA Tournament. Susquehanna was ranked No. 3 in the most recent Region V rankings, behind only Juniata College and No. 2 Johns Hopkins University.

Wednesday night's upset bid for the River Hawks never seemed to get going, as the host Eagles (27-1) held SU to negative hitting in the first set. Susquehanna started to attack better in the second set, posting a .225 hitting percentage, but JC answered with a match-high 17 kills to pull away for a 2-0 lead.

It was more of the same in the third set, as Juniata advanced to the Landmark Conference title match. The Eagles have now been involved in every Landmark title game, and have won every single Landmark Conference championship since the start of the league back in 2007. The Eagles will host No. 2 seed Scranton Saturday afternoon.

Middle hitter Kody Dillon led the team offensively with six kills on 13 attacks, hitting a team-best 462. Riley O'Dowd posted four kills, while Rosina Esposito finished with three terminations and five digs. Senior Samantha Balsamo finished with six assists and 12 digs, and Keira Roach added seven assists for the RIver Hawks.

Senior Lizzie Herestofa had a team-leading 17 digs upping her career total to 1993 for her career. Megan Nelson also added 12 digs for Susquehanna (22-6). Lily Podolan finished with a match-high 13 kills as teammate Victoria Taylor tallied 11 kills. Kennedy Christy posted eight terminations and 13 digs, and Kiona Sky Rousset finished with 30 digs in the win.

The NCAA will release a selection show 12:30 p.m. on Monday afternoon at ncaa.com.
