MADISON, N.J. – The Susquehanna University softball team began their four-game series with Drew University Wednesday afternoon. Susquehanna (6-4, 6-4 LC) split the opening doubleheader at Drew (5-9, 5-9 LC), dropping the first game, 3-0, before taking the second, 11-4.
GAME 1
How It Happened
Drew scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Senior
Jasmine Vera, No. 2 hitter, led off the inning with a double and then advanced to third on a ground out two batters later. Back-to-back walks loaded bases with two outs, setting up junior
Makayla Sosa's two-RBI single to right-center to give the Rangers a 2-0 lead.
With runners on the corners following a wild pitch, first-year
Francesca Laurito connected an RBI single to score the hosts' third run. Senior captain
Gabby Bubba (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Pope John XXIII) got out of the fourth by striking out the next batter.
Susquehanna collected its first hit of the game in the fourth on a single by sophomore infielder
Ashley Warner (Bloomsbury, N.J./Phillipsburg) to right-center.
Sophomore right-hander
Bailey Comeau limited the River Hawks to just two more hits over the final three innings.
Inside the Box Score
Drew notched three runs on five runs with no errors while the River Hawks were held to no runs on a season-low three hits with no errors.
Top Performers
Warner had one hit and two walks while junior infielder
Kiara Bryant (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) and senior outfielder
Katherine Fahsbender (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) recorded the other two hits for SU.
Bubba dropped to 3-2 on the season as she allowed three runs (all earned) on five hits with four strikeouts, three walks, and one wild pitch in the complete-game loss.
Five different Rangers notched a hit while
Comeau threw the complete game shutout victory, fanning six River Hawks, walking three, and scattering just three hits in improving to 4-4 on the season.
GAME 2
How It Happened
The bats woke up for Susquehanna in the nightcap. The River Hawks staked an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning thanks to an RBI double by
Warner, a bases loaded walk by first-year infielder
Zoe Bork (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Egg Harbor Township), a sacrifice fly by senior outfielder
Kody Streeter (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown), and another bases-loaded walk this time by first-year outfielder
Nicole Plesh (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central).
SU tacked on two more runs in the second for a 6-0 lead as
Warner connected on another RBI double to score
Fahsbender, who had a lead-off walk and stole second.
Warner then scored the sixth run on a sacrifice fly by sophomore designated player
Morgan Henry (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge).
Susquehanna picked up the scoring once again in the fourth after the Rangers finally got on the board with a pair in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 6-2. The River Hawks scored two more on a two-RBI single to right field by sophomore catcher
Rosemarie Mirabella (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape).
Henry drove in
Fahsbender in the fifth with a single to center field to make it 7-2.
The Rangers struck once again with two more runs in the fifth to pull within three as senior
Sophie Sirota brought home a run with a one-out single and then scored on a wild pitch after advancing to second on a walk and then stealing third.
Following a scoreless sixth inning, SU notched its final two runs as
Warner cracked a triple to center field to once again bring home
Fahsbender, who led off with a single.
Bork then drove in
Warner with a two-out single to centerfield.
Junior right-hander
Katie Murphy (Havre de Grace, Md./C. Milton Wright) held Drew to just one hit in the seventh as
Murphy retired the first two batters before
Sosa singled to third.
Murphy then got the next batter to ground out to seal the win for Susquehanna.
Inside the Box Score
The River Hawks matched their season-best 11 runs on a season-high 15 hits, including four of the extra-base kind, with one error while Drew score four runs on five hits with one error.
Top Performers
Warner went 4-for-5, finishing a home run shy of hitting for the cycle, scored four runs, and collected three RBI while junior infielder
Erin Bean (Watchung, N.J./Watchung Hills) hit 3-for-5.
Murphy (1-1) earned the win with 2.2 innings of relief, allowing no runs and scattering just two hits with four strikeouts and three wild pitches.
The Rangers once again had five different players hit singles while junior
Emilee Marshall (0-2) suffered the loss after giving up six runs (all earned) on four hits with five walks in just one inning.
