SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna University softball team's skid grew to six straight games Saturday afternoon as Susquehanna (6-10, 6-10 LC) dropped two to No. 10 Moravian College (16-0, 12-0 LC). The River Hawks' rallied late in the opener but came up short in a 6-5 loss before falling 7-3 in the nightcap.
GAME 1
How It Happened
Moravian jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning behind an RBI single from senior
Brooke Wehr, the cleanup hitter, for the early 1-0 advantage. First-year
Ajala Elmore, the No. 8 hitter, then cracked a two-out triple to centerfield to drive in three runs. A ground out to second base prevented a bigger a deficit for the River Hawks.
Susquehanna got right back in the game with three runs in the third. Junior catcher
Katie Koch (West Milton, Pa./Lewisburg Area), the No. 6 hitter, set the scoring in motion with a single through the left side to score first-year pinch runner
Rachel Lorence (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North). Senior infielder
Madison Lane (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) followed
Koch with a two-RBI double to pull the River Hawks within 4-3.
A one-out RBI double by
Wehr in the fourth and a two-out RBI double by sophomore
Alexis Agrapides in the fifth pushed the Greyhounds' lead to 6-3. Senior
Gabby Bubba (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Pope John XXIII) held Moravian in check with back-to-back three-up, three-down innings in the sixth and seventh, setting up Susquehanna's rally in the seventh.
Sophomore designated player
Morgan Henry (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge), the No. 5 hitter, connected on a two-run homer to close the gap to 6-5 with only one out on the board. The River Hawks would get no closer as senior
Meghan Bauer got the next two batters with a ground out and a strikeout to seal the Moravian win.
Inside the Box Score
Susquehanna scored five runs on nine hits with two errors while leaving eight on base. The River Hawks connected on three extra-base hits. The Greyhounds posted six runs on nine hits and stranded eight runners as well. Moravian also had three extra-base hits plus three sacrifice hits.
Top Performers
Sophomore infielder
Ashley Warner (Bloomsbury, N.J./Phillipsburg) continued her hot streak, going 3-for-4 with a run, while
Henry finished 2-for-3 with a double and a home run plus two RBI and two runs.
Lane also had two hits in three at-bats with a two-bagger and two RBI.
Bubba (3-5) threw her fourth complete game of the season, allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits with three walks, one strikeout, and one hit batter.
Agrapides and
Wehr each had two hits for the Greyhounds while
Elmore drove in three runs.
Bauer (4-0) picked up the win with 4.2 innings of relief, striking out five and walking only one as she gave up just two runs (both earned) on three hits.
GAME 2
How It Happened
Senior
Shannon Brogan put Moravian on the board in the third with a two-out, three-run dinger. The Greyhounds then stretched their lead to 5-0 with two more runs in the fourth thanks to an RBI double by
Agrapides and an RBI single by junior
Victoria Smith.
The River Hawks cut the deficit to two with three scores in the fifth. After opening the inning with two outs, Susquehanna runners reached base on a Moravian error (
Nicole Plesh) and a single by junior captain
Erin Bean (Watchung, N.J./Watchung Hills). Then
Lane stroked an RBI double followed by a two RBI single by
Warner.
Moravian scored a pair of insurance runs in the sixth on a bases loaded error and a bases loaded hit by pitch.
Inside the Box Score
The River Hawks notched three runs on six hits with two errors and left six on base while Moravian scored seven runs on 12 hits with three errors. The Greyhounds had four extra-base hits and three sacrifice hits while stranding 13 runners.
Top Performers
Six different players had a hit for Susquehanna with
Warner batting in two runs and
Lane hitting the lone extra-base hit. Junior
Katie Murphy (1-2) gave up five runs (all earned) on 10 hits with three strikeouts and two hit batters in 5.0 innings.
Smith finished 4-for-4 at the plate with a double and two runs while
Brogan went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Sophomore
Madison Hummel (7-0) scattered six hits and allowed three runs (two earned) in her fifth complete game of the season.
