MADISON, N.J. – The Susquehanna University men's tennis team saw their four-match win streak come to an end Saturday afternoon at Drew University. Susquehanna (6-3, 5-3 LC) dropped a 7-2 decision to the undefeated Rangers (6-0, 6-0 LC) in Landmark Conference action.
Despite the loss, the River Hawks secured the fourth seed and a home playoff match in the 2021 Landmark Conference Men's Tennis Championship, which begins Saturday, May 1 with quarterfinal action.
How It Happened
Doubles
Drew gained an early 2-0 advantage with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
The tandem of junior
Emil Vyskocil (Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y./Cornwall) and sophomore
Conor Ryan (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) put the River Hawks on the scoreboard with an 8-6 triumph at No. 1 doubles, sending SU into singles action down 2-1.
Singles
The Rangers clinched the match at 5-1 by capturing No. 1, No. 3, and No. 5 singles.
Sophomore
Joshua Sanderson (Mount Wolf, Pa./Northeastern) interrupted Drew's run with a 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (6) triumph at No. 2 singles over
Dan Blumenthal for Susquehanna's second and final point of the match. The win moved
Sanderson to 6-3 on the season, finishing the regular season on a five-match win streak.
First-year
Alex Baker (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) suffered his first loss of the season, dropping to 5-1 on the season with a 6-0, 6-3 loss to
Bret Schuler at No. 6 singles.
Sophomore
John Duncan (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) gave
Jeremy Gottlieb a fight at No. 4 singles, forcing a third set with a 6-4 win in the second.
Gottlieb outlasted Duncan, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 for the win.
