Susquehanna Women’s Lacrosse Bows Out of Landmark Championship

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Third time was not the charm for the Susquehanna University women's lacrosse team as Susquehanna suffered a setback at the hands of nationally-ranked The Catholic University of America for the third time this season. No. 5 seed Susquehanna (4-5) dropped an 18-6 decision to No. 6 and top-seeded Catholic (8-0) in the semifinals of the 2021 Landmark Conference Championship on Wednesday afternoon.

How It Happened
Goals by first-years Heather Riefenhauser (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) and Madi Mitchell (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) sandwiched a pair of Catholic scores and the game was tied at 2-all with 18:51 remaining in the first half.

The host Cardinals used a 7-0 run to stake their first lead of the game, 9-2, with 10:48 left in the half. First-year midfielder Kelsey Homberg (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) notched a man-down goal for Susquehanna's third goal. Catholic headed into halftime with a 10-3 advantage after Anna Maupin tacked on one more goal with less than two minutes left.

Catholic pushed its lead to nine with the first two goals of the second half. Senior captain Nicole Hauck (Annandale, N.J./North Hunterdon) and junior attacker Caroline Chase (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) closed the gap to 12-5 with 17:00 on the clock. The two sides alternated the next two scores before the Cardinals ended the game on a 5-0 run, including three from Kate Olsen.
