ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The Susquehanna University baseball team won the first two games of their four-game series with Elizabethtown College Saturday afternoon. The River Hawks (3-4, 3-1 LC) posted a 3-1 win in the first game behind solid pitching from first-years
Teagan Duffie (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone Area) and
Aidan Martin (Washington Township, N.J./Bergen Catholic). In the second half of the doubleheader, SU exploded for 11 runs in an 11-4 victory over the Elizabethtown Blue Jays (5-3, 5-3 LC).
GAME 1
How It Happened
Elizabethtown notched the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning for a 1-0 lead. Following a three-up, three-down start for the River Hawks, Etown used a two-out, RBI single to left center by senior catcher
JT Thompson to score senior infielder
Andrew Fisher, who had singled in his at-bat and then stole second.
Susquehanna had its first base runner in the top of the second inning as sophomore designated hitter
JP Yore (Olney, Md./Sherwood) drew a lead-off walk. The River Hawks would connect on their first hit of the game in third and go on to score three runs on three hits and one error. Senior infielder
Chris Corrado (Tuckahoe, N.Y./Tuckahoe) stole home for the first run before
Yore connected on his second home run of the season, a two-out, two-run shot to left field. Senior catcher
Peter Yarem (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) came home as well after singling to right center in his at-bat.
That would be all the scoring for the game as both pitching staffs combined for 12 strikeouts and limited the batters to a combined six hits over the final six innings.
Inside the Box Score
Susquehanna finished with eight hits, including one extra-base hit, while stealing seven more bases to bring their season total to 26. The Blue Jays put up five hits and committed two errors in having their three-game win streak snapped.
Top Performers
Yarem and fifth-year senior infielder
Anthony Dombrowski (Pompton Plains, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) each had two hits to lead the River Hawks while
Yore finished with two RBI.
Duffie improved to 2-0 on the season as he threw a four-hitter in 5.0 innings, allowing just one run (earned) while striking out four Etown batters.
Martin earned his first career save, giving up just one hit while fanning three batters in 4.0 innings.
Fisher paced Elizabethtown at the plate with a 2-for-4 effort and a run scored. Senior
Joseph Sarich dropped to 1-1 on the season after yielding three runs (all earned) on four hits in 5.0 innings. He struck out four and walked four.
GAME 2
How It Happened
The River Hawks scored eight runs over the final three innings to break open a 3-1 game. Susquehanna started off with two runs in the bottom of the first inning as senior outfielder
Steve Lorenz (Langhorne, Pa./William Penn Charter) brought home
Yarem and
Corrado with a single to left field.
Corrado had lead off the inning with a single and
Yarem doubled the right field line as the No. 3 hitter.
Etown got one back in its half of the first as junior infielder
Joey Thomas scored on sophomore outfielder
Ben Watson's single to right field after leading off with a double to right field.
The River Hawks tacked on another run in the third for a 3-1 lead as senior outfielder
Craig Roumes (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) crossed home plate after drawing a lead-off walk, going to second on a ground out, advancing to third on a wild pitch and scoring on
Yore's sacrifice fly.
SU added three more in the fifth with two outs on the board thanks to
Dombrowski's two-run single and junior infielder
Adam Schreck's (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) RBI single, bolstering its lead to 6-1. The Blue Jays closed the gap to 6-2 as junior infielder
Robbie Bertucio came home on a sac fly by first-year infielder
AJ Bednar after leading off the inning with a double.
Each side scored twice in the sixth for an 8-4 game through six innings. After opening up the final inning with back-to-back pop-ups, the River Hawks were able to score three more on two hits and an Etown error.
Roumes earned an RBI on a fielder's choice while
Yarem hit a two RBI single.
Inside the Box Score
Susquehanna matched its season-high with 13 hits, including two extra-base hits, and picked up another seven stolen bases to raise its conference-leading total to 33. The Blue Jays tallied seven hits, including a pair of extra-base hits, while leaving seven on base.
Top Performers
Yarem went 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored while three other River Hawks had two hits apiece. Junior starter
Kyle Sears (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) earned the win as
Sears (1-1) scattered five hits and allowed four runs (all earned) in 5.1 innings. He struck out four while walking just one.
Senior outfielder
Arley Shepherd led Etown offensively, going 2-for-3 with two RBI. The Blue Jays used five pitchers in trying to contain Susquehanna. Sophomore
Zach Silfies dropped to 2-1 on the season as
Silfies gave up three runs (all earned) on four hits in 3.2 innings. He also walked three, struck out two and threw two wild pitches.
