BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior
Peter Yarem (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains Fanwood) drove in five runs on Thursday afternoon as the Susquehanna University baseball team continued action in the 2021 Landmark Conference Baseball Championship. Sixth-seeded Susquehanna (10-16) rallied but came up short in a 10-7 loss to fourth-seeded Moravian College (13-15).
The River Hawks now await the loser from Saturday (May 15) morning's matchup between No. 1 seed The University of Scranton and Moravian. SU will play either Scranton or Moravian on Saturday at Scranton at 2:30 p.m., with the loser being eliminated from the Landmark Championship.
How It Happened
The Greyhounds ran off to an 8-0 advantage through four innings, having scored two in the second, three in the third, and three more in the fourth.
Thomas Philipps and
Ian Csencsits each batted in two runs during the run while
Brett Moyer scored twice for Moravian.
Susquehanna jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning, cutting the deficit to 8-3 with the first of
Yarem's two long ball hits.
Yarem's first dinger of the game and the season was a one-out, three-run shot down the leftfield line, bringing home senior
Chris Corrado (Tuckahoe, N.Y./Tuckahoe), who hit a leadoff double, and fifth-year senior
Anthony Dombrowski (Pompton Plains, N.J./Don Bosco Prep), who reached on a throwing error.
Eddie Olsen faced three more batters, sandwiching a walk between a grounder and a fly-out to stop the rally.
Moravian got one back in its half of the fifth on a two-out infield single by
Carmine Palummo for a 9-3 lead.
SU responded in kind in the sixth as back-to-back two-out singles by
Dombrowski and fifth-year senior
Craig Roumes (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) sent first-year
Kris Morrow (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) across home plate after leading off the inning with a double. The River Hawks loaded the bases after
Yarem was hit by a pitch leading to a pitching change by Moravian as
Kyle Serman came in for
Olsen.
Serman was able to work a popup for the last out.
Susquehanna revived the rally in the eighth as
Roumes connected on a two-out double to score
Dombrowski and then came home when
Yarem struck once again, this time with a two-run shot over the leftfield fence to pull the River Hawks within 9-7.
The Greyhounds scored an insurance run in their half of the eighth as
Derek Holmes hit a one-out single and then stole second, went to third on a balk, and crossed home plate on a wild pitch with two outs on the board.
The visitors looked to threatened in the ninth as fifth-year senior
Alec Ranck (Elverson, Pa./Twin Valley) connected on a one-out double and first-year
Tyler Hargus (Odenton, Md./Spalding) put into a play a two-out single to put runners on the corners but
Ranck was thrown out at third to end the game.
Inside the Box Score
Today's game marked the ninth time this season that Susquehanna has notched double-digit hits as the River Hawks scored seven runs on a dozen hits, including seven of the extra-base variety, with two errors. SU did strand nine runners. Moravian posted its 10 runs on 16 hits with one error while leaving nine runners on base as well.
Top Performers
Roumes paced the River Hawks at the plate by going 3-for-4 with doubles and two RBI while
Yarem finished the game, 2-for-4, with five RBI, two homers, and two runs scored.
Ranck also finished with two hits.
Junior starter
Dillan Weikel (2-1) suffered the loss on the mound as
Weikel gave up seven runs (six earned) on nine hits with two strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work. Senior
Jake Ramezzana (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) threw the final 3.0 innings and struck out four in allowing one run on four hits.
Holmes,
Moyer, and
Philipps all went 3-for-5 to lead Moravian offensively while
Holmes and
Moyer each scored two runs and
Philipps drove in two runs.
Olsen (5-2) notched the win as he struck out five in 5.2 innings for his fifth win of the season while
Serman earned his fifth save of the season with four strikeouts.
