MADISON, N.J. – The 2021 season came to an end for the Susquehanna University men's tennis team Tuesday afternoon in the semifinals of the 2021 Landmark Conference Men's Tennis Championship. Fourth-seeded Susquehanna (7-4) bowed out following a 5-0 shutout loss to top-seeded Drew University (9-0).
How It Happened
Doubles
Drew swept the three doubles matches, dropping a combined eight games over the three matches.
The River Hawks' duo of first-years
Alex Baker (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and
Kyle Wagner (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) had the closet match for Susquehanna, falling 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.
Baker and
Wagner finish the season with a 1-1 record.
Junior
Ethan Cooley (Califon, N.J./Voorhees) and first-year
Tim Basta (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) also put up a fight in doubles action, taking three games from the Rangers before losing 8-3 at No. 2 doubles. The tandem had a solid season for the River Hawks, posting a team-leading 7-3 record.
The Rangers headed into singles play with a 3-0 advantage.
Singles
Geoffrey Diehl pushed Drew's lead to 4-0 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles over junior
Emil Vyskocil (Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y./Cornwall).
Vyskocil ended his junior campaign with a 6-4 record.
Santo Carroccia clinched the win for the Rangers and a spot in the Landmark title match with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over
Basta.
Basta completed his rookie year with a 5-4 mark.
