Roumes Collects 100th Hit as River Hawks Baseball Stumbles at Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. – Fifth-year senior Craig Roumes (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) notched his 100th career hit in the second game Tuesday evening at the University of Scranton. Susquehanna (7-14, 7-11 LC) dropped both to Scranton (16-8, 16-8 LC), 5-4 and 5-2, in Landmark Conference action.

With today's sweep, the host Royals claimed the series with SU, 3-1, as the River Hawks posted a 7-1 win in their meeting back on April 26.

GAME 1
How It Happened
Justin Pinkert connected on a one-out walk-off RBI single in the ninth to score Corey Zientek, who hit a lead-off single, and clinch the first game victory.

Junior Adam Schreck (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) had put Susquehanna on the scoreboard first after two scoreless innings with a lead-off solo shot over the left center fence at the top of third. The Royals responded with three runs on five hits, including three consecutive RBI singles, in their half of the third to claim a 3-1 advantage.

SU pulled within one in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Schreck and evened the score at 3-all in the fifth on a two-out RBI double by senior Peter Yarem (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains Fanwood). The River Hawks then retook the lead, 4-3, in the sixth on a bases-load walk drawn by sophomore Brock Veit (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South).

The score was tied up once again in the bottom of the seventh at 4-4 thanks to a two-out RBI single by Jake Lisicky.

Inside the Box Score
Susquehanna tallied four runs on nine hits with no errors while leaving 11 runners stranded. The Royals put up five runs on 11 hits with no errors and eight left on base.

Top Performers
Schreck, Roumes, and senior Chris Corrado (Tuckahoe, N.Y./Tuckahoe) each notched two hits to lead the River Hawks while Schreck drove in two runs as well.  Senior Jake Ramezzana (Nutley, N.J./Nutley) took the loss with 1.1 innings of relief, giving up the game-winning run on two hits.
Four Royals collected two hits each while Lisicky had two RBI and Zientek stole three bases. Ryan Heiser (1-1) earned the win with just 0.1 hitless innings of relief.

GAME 2
How It Happened
The nightcap began the same way in terms of the score as the first game. Following two scoreless innings, the River Hawks struck first on a Corrado sacrifice fly for the early 1-0 lead in the third. And once again, Scranton scored three in its half of the third on a bases-loaded wild pitch, a sac fly, and a single to center to stake its first lead of the game.

The Royals went up 4-1 in the fourth on a one-out RBI single by Tyler Kirsten and stretched their advantage to 5-1 in the fifth on another base-loaded wild pitch.

Roumes' 100th hit came on an RBI double to left field to bring home Corrado, who notched a lead-off single, in the sixth and cut the deficit to 5-2. Despite Scranton making two errors in the inning, the River Hawks were unable to generate in any further offense.

Three straight grounders to retire the Royal side in order in the sixth kept the River Hawks within three entering the seventh. Following a lead-off strikeout, fifth-year senior Anthony Dombrowski (Pompton Plains, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) drew a walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a Scranton throwing error. However, Daniel Johnson, who came in relief to start the seventh, halted SU's comeback attempt back-to-back strikeouts.

Inside the Box Score
The River Hawks posted two runs on six hits with no errors, leaving five on base. Scranton also had six hits but committed three errors and stranded 10 runners.

Top Performers
Corrado led the way for Susquehanna with a 2-for-3 effort with an RBI and a run. First-year Anthony Colucci (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) got the start for SU and was saddled with the loss following 3.0 innings of work, allowing three runs on three hits and matching his season-best of three strikeouts.

Thomas Plunkett garnered the win after throwing 6.0 innings and giving up two runs on six hits while Johnson recorded his first save of the season following a scoreless inning of relief with three strikeouts.
