Ripans First Collegiate Tally Lifts No. 18 River Hawks Past King's, 1-0

SELINSGROVE, PA (September 15, 2021) -- First-year forward Rebecca Ripans tallied her first collegiate goal early on in the second half to lift the No. 18 Susquehanna University field hockey team to a 1-0 victory over King's College in play from Sassafras Field Wednesday.

The game was delayed for just under an hour due to storms in the area before the two teams were able to hit the pitch, and Susquehanna (4-0) went on the offensive early controlling play and hemming the Monarchs into their own zone.

Two early shots by Ripans and Katie Bucher were stopped in the opening minutes, before King's had its best chance of the night at 10:29 when Mackenzie Bross was forced to make a save on a shot by Danielle Runo.

The game would go the other way from that point on, as SU controlled the possession for much of the rest of the half. The best chance in the first 30 minutes for the River Hawks came in the 17th minute, as a Ripans chance was stopped off the line by a defensive save from Lexi Prowker .

A few moments later King's (2-2) was forced to make another defensive save, this time thwarting Ripans again off the line by Abby Wolfe. Late in the half, Abbey Reist had great shots off penalty corners but was denied by King's keeper Ellie Glatz.

The breakthrough for the River Hawks finally came following intermission, as Ripans was rewarded for her constant pressure all game with her first career Susquehanna goal. On the play, the ball was played in from the left wing and deflected by Cassie West just in front of goal. The deflection trickled towards the goal line and Ripans hammered it home for the game-winner.

Susquehanna would continue to have pressure for the rest of the game, and looked to have doubled its lead at the end of the third quarter but an apparent goal was called off. In the end, the one goal was all the hosts needed in extending the win streak to four games to start the 2021 season.
