Volleyball Falls To No. 4 Colorado College, Match With Ithaca Postponed Saturday

Box Score BALTIMORE, MD (September 18, 2021) -- The Susquehanna University volleyball team faced another Top 5 team Saturday, playing No. 4 Colorado College tough before dropping a 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-23, 25-18) decision in play from the Johns Hopkins Invitational. The River Hawks' second match of the day against Ithaca College was postponed. 

Against No. 4 Colorado College, the River Hawks (5-4) fell behind 9-4 early in the opening set before rallying to pull to within one at 9-8 after a service ace by Megan Nelson. CC (11-0) pushed its lead out to 20-14 before Susquehanna rallied to as close as 23-20 thanks to a 5-0 run finished by a kill from Rosina Esposito

The Tigers would take the opening set though capturing the final two points of the opening set. The second set was once again saw Colorado College take take an early lead, going up 17-11 midway through the set. That's when the River Hawk rally started, posting a 6-1 run to pull to within one at 18-17. 

Colorado College posted three straight points, but SU rallied right back with a 8-0 run to capture the second set capped by a service ace by Ryan Rorls. SU held the Tigers to just .048 hitting in the second stanza, while forcing them into 10 attacking errors. 

In the third set, the River Hawks this time jumped out quickly with 10 of the first 13 points including a kill by Paige Sfiroudis. CC started to creep back into the set, and finally pulled even at 19 after a kill by Isabella Vasquez. After the set was tied at 22, CC recorded three of the last four points to take a 2-1 match advantage. 

Colorado College's offense came alive in the fourth set, hitting .355 while posting just one error to take the match in four games. Esposito led the way for the River Hawks with 10 kills, while Kody Dillon and Brooke LaCesa each finished with seven apiece. 

Dillon added three blocks, and Madison Rockey chalked up a double-double of 27 assists and 16 digs. Vasquez led all hitters with 19 kills, while teammates Georgia Mullins and Isabella Lipacis each finished with 13 and 11 terminations, respectively.

  • Susquehanna will travel to McDaniel College Wednesday evening, September 22 at 7:30 p.m. for non-conference action in Westminster, MD.
