Box Score Selinsgrove, Pa. – The Field Hockey team capped off an excellent weekend at the 2021 Connie Harnum Classic, defeating #5 Salisbury University by a score of 2-1. Freshman
Kari Schmidt (Downingtown, PA/Downington West) knocked in the game winner off a penalty stroke in the 42
nd minute late in the third period. The freshman midfielder laced a perfect strike in the right corner of the goal, sending the River Hawk faithful into elation.
The scoring got started in the second period when Salisbury's Allie Davis earned a penalty stroke off a Susquehanna foul and were able to convert.
Two minutes later, the River Hawks tied the game up when
Katie Koch (West Milton, PA/Lewisburg Area) delivered a pass right to
Sarah McAndrews (Wallingford, PA/Strath Haven) who redirected the pass into the goal. The score was the first of
McAndrews' career and prevented the Seagulls from gaining any momentum, while giving life and energy to SU.
In the third period, Susquehanna had a golden opportunity with the ball inside the arc and advantage in numbers. Salisbury then committed a costly foul in the penalty circle, awarding the River Hawks a penalty stroke.
Schmidt was given the opportunity in only her second collegiate game, to take a late lead against the #5 team in the nation. The first career goal for the freshman netted the River Hawks' first lead, which proved to be enough for the strong defense lead by goalkeeper
Mackenzie Bross (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge).
For the second day in a row,
Bross was excellent in her post, allowing just the one goal on a penalty stroke. The junior goalie collected six saves for the second day in a row, to lead a stout defensive group, with the likes of Landmark First-Team defender
Annalee Smith (Flanders, NJ/Mount Olive). The group held strong in the fourth period withstanding two penalty corners in the final 15 minutes, securing a huge win over an excellent opponent.
Other Notes
- Salisbury outshot Susquehanna 9-3 on the afternoon but were not able to connect on their opportunities. The teams were about even in corners with the Seagulls gaining a slight advantage, 9-8.
