Scranton Hands Susquehanna First Conference Loss of 21-22 Season

SCRANTON, PA - The River Hawks fell to the University of Scranton Royals on Wednesday night, as the Royals shot 57.9% from the floor and 41% from deep to best Susquehanna. Dominic Dunn was the leading scorer for the River Hawks with 14 points, as Susquehanna had four players in double figures.

The Royals jumped out to an early 10-2 lead, a lead that would remain in Scranton's possession for the vast majority of the game. Susquehanna was able to tie the game at 23 after two free throws from Danny Frauenheim, but Jack Brockett knocked down a three to give a lead that the Royals would not relinquish for the rest of regulation. Scranton would continue to build a lead throughout the remainder of the first half, but a Wes Simons layup just before the buzzer sounded would cut the Scranton lead to seven heading into halftime.

Another strong start to a half from the Royals would push their lead to as many as 12 but the River Hawks were able to claw back into the game in the second half, as an 11-0 run, capped by a Cooper Haberern layup, would bring Susquehanna within a point. However, as the game continued to progress, the lead for the Royals continued to grow. After the River Hawks made the score 55-54 with 12:06 left in the half, Scranton finished the game on a 31-18 run, building a lead as large as 17 points.

The Royals were led by a strong game from Jackson Danzig who finished with 25 points and five rebounds, while also receiving an excellent performance from Will McLoughlin off the bench. McLoughlin finished 9-10 from the floor for 20 points and also pulled down seven rebounds in the winning effort.

Susquehanna struggled to stop Scranton on the defensive end but still had a solid showing on offense. Lukas Yurasits contributed 12 points to the scoring cause and both Haberern and Howie Rankine each had good games off the bench. Rankine missed just one shot, with 12 points on 6-7 shooting and Haberern had 11 points to go along with six rebounds. As a team, they shot 45% from the floor but were 5-18 from downtown. The five three point makes are the least in a game for the River Hawks since their last loss to Swarthmore, when they went just 3-11 from deep. Susquehanna has now lost all four games in which they have recorded less than 30 field goals made.
