WASHINGTON, DC (January 29, 2022) -- The Susquehanna University men's basketball team upped its win streak to four Saturday afternoon at Catholic University of America, outlasting the Cardinals 62-59 in another exciting game between the two Landmark Conference squads in the DuFour Center.
The River Hawks (14-4, 6-1 Landmark) stayed right there in the Landmark Conference playoff race, trailing Drew University by a half-game thought SU does have the tie-break right now due to the win last week by Susquehanna.
Susquehanna led by as many as four points early on in the contest, but the host Cardinals (11-5, 4-3 Landmark) came back to tie the game and take the lead at 20-18 with 7:45 to go in the first half. SU responded with a mini 6-0 run as senior
Danny Frauenheim sandwiched a
Howie Rankine, Jr. layup with two of his own to give the River Hawks a 24-20 lead with 2:24 to play.
The two teams would combine for one bucket over the last two minutes, as SU took a narrow 24-22 lead into the locker room. Frauenheim led the River Hawks in the first half with 11 points, while senior
Lukas Yurasits added five points as well. Jesse Hafemeister led the Cardinals with 13 points.
In the second half, Susquehanna's lead stayed close over the first eight minutes, as CUA trailed by only one at 35-34 after two free throws by Tommy Kelly. On the next possession, junior
Dominic Dunn drained a three-pointer to start a run that ended with SU taking its largest lead of the game at 49-37 with 8:09 to go.
The Cardinals would come back thanks to a 11-2 run to make it three-point game with 3:28 to play in regulation. SU pushed its edge back up to five after Frauenheim free throws, but a triple by Jake Timby made it a two-point game at 53-51. After the teams exchanged possessions with points, SU got one of the biggest shots of the game as first-year
Cooper Haberern connected from deep at the end of the shot clock to make it 58-53.
CUA came right back with a make by Hafemeister with under a minute to play, forcing another big possession for the River Hawks. Once again, SU used the entire shot clock and Yurasits hit an off-balanced shot to make it a two-possession game once again.
Catholic got as close at one at 60-59, but a pair of free throws with five seconds to go by Frauenheim forced a three-point make by the hosts. The Cardinals would get a look at the buzzer, but Kelly's triple from 30 feet was no-good as SU clinched the victory.
Frauenheim finished with a team-leading 16 points, adding four assists and three rebounds while turning the ball over zero times. Yurasits added 13 points, making all five of his free throws, and
Jay Martin came off the bench to tally seven points and six rebounds. Rankine and Haberern also tallied six points as reserves, as the River Hawks shot 37 percent from the floor but turned the ball over just eight times.
SU also was strong at the free throw line, making 10-of-12 at the charity stripe. Catholic was led by the game-high 29 points from Hafemeister, as he went 12-of-21 from the floor.
The River Hawks continue their busy schedule on Monday, heading to Huntingdon, PA for a Landmark Conference make-up contest with Juniata College at 7 p.m. in Memorial Gym.
