Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 18/25 Catholic Tops Women's Basketball Saturday

WASHINGTON, DC (January 29, 2022) -- The Susquehanna University women's basketball team struggled offensively in the opening half, taking a 33-9 deficit into the locker room as the River Hawks fell to No. 18/25 Cardinals of Catholic University in action from Franny Murray Court at DuFour Center Saturday.

Susquehanna (10-8, 2-6 Landmark) and Catholic both didn't do much with the ball over the first five minutes of the game, as the River Hawks led 2-0 through three minutes of action on a lay-up by senior Amanda Lemire. CUA scored the next nine points to take a 9-2 lead before Kaitlyn Lynch finished a driving layup to make it 9-4.

Catholic would net the next eight points to finish the first quarter with a 13-point lead at 17-4. The hosts advantage would continue to grow up t0 24 at 33-9 going into the break. SU's defense played well in the opening 20 minutes, but the River Hawks just couldn't get anything to fall going 4-27 in the first two quarters.

From that point on the River Hawks played the ranked Cardinals tight, outscoring CUA 17-16 in the fourth quarter but it wasn't enough to mount the comeback. Lemire finished with a team-high eight points on the day for SU, and senior Amalia Esposito finished with six points, five rebounds and two steals.

Lynch added six points for the River Hawks, and senior Megan Emlet came off the bench to tally six points and three rebounds. Junior Isabella Schwabe was also 2-for-3 from the floor for four points, chalking up five rebounds, and Grace Meehan nailed another three-pointer in her two minutes of play.

Luca Mamula led all scorers on the day, finishing with a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds. Rachel Bussanich pulled down 15 rebounds for the Cardinals, which won the battle on the boards 47-31. Carly Mulvaney also registered 12 points and four rebounds off the bench for CUA.
