WILLIAMSPORT, PA (October 12, 2022) – The Susquehanna men's soccer team hit the road on Wednesday evening for a non-conference match with Penn College before returning to Landmark play over the weekend. The River Hawks earned their first win of the 2022 campaign, taking a 2-0 victory over the Wildcats.
The teams went back and forth in the early goings, trading shots in the early goings with both teams able to move into each other's defensive ends. Penn came close in the 16th minute, hitting the crossbar but still kept out. The opening score finally came in the 37th minute as Susquehanna took a lead for just the third time this season. A ball through the defense from Clay Yannazzone found Seth Sidle, who zipped into the box and chipped the ball over the oncoming keeper and into the back of the net to take the lead.
Penn College had three more shots before the end of the first half but couldn't get any on net. Carrying the 1-0 lead into the second half, SU would tally five more shots in the second half, which Penn College would match. The Wildcats had their only shot on goal of the night in the 61st minute, which Gerrit Stech would save to preserve the lead.
The insurance goal came in the 84th minute, when the River Hawks were pressing an attack into the Wildcats' box and drew a penalty. Senior Walter Wyatt stepped up and buried the penalty to ensure the victory for Susquehanna.
SU will hope to begin a win streak to close out the season, with five fixtures left in the regular season, including four more against Landmark opponents. Their next will see them return home on Saturday, October 15 to host Catholic University at 1 pm.
