Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Win Streak Comes to an End as SUFH Falls at CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, VA (October 17, 2022) – The Susquehanna field hockey team remained on the road after their Saturday matchup with Catholic University, travelling to Virginia on Monday to face Christopher Newport University in a non-conference game. The River Hawks would see a nine-game win streak come to an end on Monday, falling 4-1 to the Captains. It was also SU's first road loss of the season.

The chances came early and often for CNU, as they tallied their first shot less than two minutes into the game after earning a penalty corner. Goalkeeper Mackenzie Bross stepped up to make the save, the first of three that she would make in the first period alone. CNU continued to put on the pressure, and a penalty corner in the 7th minute led to a blocked shot, before forcing another save from Bross a few seconds later, followed by a defensive save from Lydia Hidlay on the rebound. The whistle would then blow and CNU was awarded a penalty stroke, which they would convert to take the lead. SU would produce chances on two penalty corners of their own later in the period, but would see a save and two blocks keep them from finding an equalizer. Meanwhile, the Captains tallied a second goal late in the period to double their advantage.

Susquehanna responded with their first goal early in the second period, after forcing a penalty corner and keeping the ball around CNU's end until a pass from Lexi Fumanti found the stick of Lydia Hidlay, who was able to score and make the score 2-1.

It would remain there into halftime and the River Hawks would come out of halftime on the front foot, producing sustained pressure with six shots in third period alone, but were ultimately unable to beat the CNU goalkeeper, who made two saves to keep them in the lead. A counterattack for CNU late in the period would earn them a penalty corner, which would see an initial shot blocked and then a second penalty corner granted, which they would eventually convert to reestablish their two-goal advantage.

The wind seemed to go out of SU's sails after that, as they managed just one shot in the fourth period while primarily defending from CNU attacks. One of those would eventually pay off and CNU would score their fourth goal late in the fourth period, their first goal from open play.

SUFH will now return home and look to reestablish their winning ways against Keystone College, who they'll host on Wednesday, October 19 at 7 pm. Their next Landmark match will be on Saturday the 22nd, as they'll head northeast to visit Scranton, who currently sit in second place, just below the River Hawks, in the Landmark Conference standings.
