HUNTINGDON, PA (October 19, 2022) – The Susquehanna men's soccer team traveled to Huntingdon on Wednesday to night to face Juniata College in a late-season Landmark Conference matchup. The River Hawks saw promising production on the offensive end, scoring multiple goals in a game for just the second time this season, but would ultimately be outpaced by the Eagles and fall 4-2.
The teams traded opportunities in the opening minutes, with SU earning two corner kicks in the opening minute and a half before Juniata had a corner kick of their own in the 5th minute and had a shot blocked shortly after. Juniata would score the first of their four goals in the 16th minute, but Susquehanna would tie the game back up less than ten minutes later. Drawing a penalty kick call as Kevin Ayoso was pulled down inside the box, Tommy O'Keefe converted to make the score 1-1.
Juniata would produce a couple more chances before the half though and converted again in the 35th minute to retake a one-goal advantage.
The offenses were free flowing in the early part of the second half as both teams forced three shots in the first fifteen minutes of the half, with Juniata drawing a save from Gerrit Stech to keep the score at 2-1. However, the River Hawks would be put on the back foot when a second yellow card to Clay Yannazzone in the 61st minute meant he was sent off and the team would be a man down for the remainder of the game.
Not long after, Juniata would double their lead as an initial save from Stech on a header rebounded to a Juniata attacker, who fired home. Despite the man disadvantage, SU did not give up on trying to get chances on offense and a late free kick outside the box saw Walter Wyatt score a low curling shot and make the score 3-2, bringing the game back in reach for the last three minutes. Juniata pushed back less than a minute later to ice the game, scoring in the 89th minute to reestablish the two-goal advantage and see out the win.
Two of Susquehanna's three remaining games will come against Landmark opponents, beginning with Scranton on Saturday, October 22. The team will celebrate Senior Day at Sassafras Field and kick off the match at 1 pm.
