Win Streak Snapped for Women's Soccer In Heartbreaker Against Scranton

SELINSGROVE, PA (October 22, 2022) – Facing off against Scranton while celebrating Senior Day with first place in the Landmark Conference on the line, the stakes could not have been higher for Susquehanna women's soccer on Saturday afternoon. The game would live up to the hype, proving to be a dramatic and contentious affair, but when the final whistle blew, the River Hawks were on the wrong side of a 1-0 scoreline.

The play would be very end-to-end in the early stages, despite the stout defensive records of both teams. But while the chances came, with Susquehanna tallying six shots in the first half and Scranton having four, neither offense was able to find the net, with both keepers making two saves on shots on goal.

It would be the second half that proved decisive and saw a tonal shift in the opening seconds. Scranton would take the ball immediately down the field and would find the only goal of the game at the 45:26 mark, with their leading scorer Niamh Healy hitting a shot to bottom left corner of the net that just beat the gloves of Paisley Tornatore. The River Hawks would look galvanized to find an equalizer in the immediate aftermath of conceding, with Gillian Maack forcing a save on the next shot of the game and then Delaney Morton hitting a shot that just went high of going in the net, ricocheting off the crossbar. But those would prove to be Susquehanna's only two shots in the half, as they seemed to run out of steam down the stretch and saw themselves spending more time defending from Scranton attacks than attacking themselves. The Royals had four more shots in the half, forcing another save from Tornatore.

Susquehanna had a last-ditch chance in the final seconds of the match as they earned a corner kick with less than 30 seconds remaining, but though the ball would be swung in by Emily Wertz well, it just cleared the leaping goalkeeper but couldn't find any Susquehanna attackers either and couldn't be put home.

The River Hawks will now look to lock down a second-place finish in the Landmark in their season finale matchup with Drew on Saturday, October 29. Drew currently sits in third with a 4-1-1 record, just behind the 5-1 record of SU. Therefore, a win or a draw for the River Hawks will clinch second place and a chance to host their semifinal matchup in the Landmark Conference Tournament. That match at Drew will kick off at 4 pm.
