SELINSGROVE, PA (October 29, 2022) – The Susquehanna field hockey team closed out the regular season on a high note on Saturday afternoon, celebrating Senior Day at Sassafras Field and taking a 3-0 win over Drew to finish out 15-5 overall and 6-1 in the conference and claim the second seed for the Landmark Conference Tournament.
Things began slowly for the offense, as they would manage just two shots in the first period, with Sophia Prata forcing a save from the Drew goalkeeper just over three minutes into the match. While the rest of the period was quiet, the floodgates would burst open in the second period. SU would tally a whopping 18 shots in the frame, finally breaking through with the first score of the game in the 14th minute, as Prata put one home following a penalty corner chance.
The shots continued to mount for Susquehanna through the second and into the third period, scoring their second goal through a penalty stroke goal in the 42nd minute, converted by Annalee Smith for her team-leading 13th goal of the season.
The final tally came in the fourth period, as a penalty corner from Smith found Kari Schmidt at the top of the circle, where she fired home to score the third goal of the game and her third goal of the season.
All told, the River Hawks tallied an astonishing 40 shots in the game, with 25 of them on goal. In conjunction, Drew's keeper would make a hefty 22 saves to keep the score at 3-0. SU would also register 20 penalty corners in the stellar offensive display.
The team will now prepare for their semifinal matchup at home on Wednesday evening, hosting #3 seed Catholic University for a 7 pm start and a chance for a spot in the Landmark Conference Championship.
